That Nylander contract was bloody confusing. Did he have a $10 million cap hit in year one because it was pro-rated, or something?? I seem to recall that. I remember when it was first reported thinking that was his cap hit and Toronto really f'd up with that one.
At 6.9 million, I still think Nylander is overpaid, but considering some of these other contracts being signed lately, it isn't as bad as it seemed at the time of the signing, if Nylander returns to being a 60+ pt top line winger with room to improve.
I think many people felt that Dubas caved and gave Nylander everything he wanted, which in the end made it seem like the holdout worked. I think that is partially why the Nylander contract receives such criticism.
That said, the contract is probably about a million more than I would have liked, though.

the full effect of who gets squeezed the most due to the leagues stars and semi stars getting a bigger piece of the teams salary pie is a work in progress . I mean the cap barely went up and guys like brock nelson , kevin hayes got aprox 1 mil more aav than they probably should have . its like theres a 1 mil bump required to just get these types of guys inked .

Everyone keeps talking about how the Nylander deal is so bad, but its actually the Matthews deal that got the GM's in the league all up in arms. Usually you see a player wanting the long term deal, and the team wanting the lower or reasonable AAV. Exhibit A - William Karlsson's new deal in Vegas. Matthews got a shorter term, but still got huge money! Which means he is still in his prime in 5 years and will cash in again, and probably even bigger.
I will say that Nylander, if he is able to play with Matthews, will be a 75pt player with upside, and that $6.9M will look just fine. People are all crazy about the lack of value, because he had such a bad year, but that will change. Plus, with all the money the Leafs paid upfront, his contract will look very enticing for teams looking for a great young player, and not have to pay him the big money, and still get the AAV.
After this RFA class gets sorted out, his $6.9M will look like a steal.

Brian Burke has said that Marner has been offered an 80mill/8yr deal (10mill/yr) but he isn't interested in that long of a deal. And also if you're Marner, you've gone this far why wouldn't you listen to other teams on June 26th?

Something interesting that was talked about on Ottawa talk radio yesterday is whether he would take a long-term deal with another team. Rumour is he wants a shorter-term deal like Matthews so they can get a bigger deal in five years. However, if you're another team and you're offering him a contract where you'll be losing four first-round picks, you're going to want him signed for a max deal in terms of length.
