I didn't even think of this. Great point.

Dreger said that 3-4 teams will meet him, he said an NHL agent and an NHL-exec told him could have an offersheet "in the teens" like 13-14mill/yr for 5yrs.

    Who can even offer it?
    - New Jersey, but could spell the end of Hall after this yr
    - Carolina, but they have other things to tackle first likely
    - NYI, but they need to sign Lehner, Beauviller, Dal Colle and they'd likely then let Lee go to FA
    - Vancouver, But oh wait, no 1st round pick in 2020
    - Rangers, lots of space, but those 1st round picks could be high
    - Colorado, LOTS of space, but lots of RFAs themselves.
    - Florida Panthers. Space, rumoured to go after Panarin/Bob (18mill total), if they get both, Luo retires, they would still need to offload like 7mill to get it done. But if they swing and miss on Panarin, Marner could be the backup plan.

Interesting to note, while the 4 first round picks have to be the clubs own draft picks, they can be from a 5 year window. So, a team without a 2020 first round pick can still put in an offer sheet.

Word for word from the CBA:

Clubs owing three (3) draft selections in the same round must have them available in the next four (4) drafts, and so on.

When a Club owes two (2) or more draft selections in the same round, the signing Club does not elect the years in which such selections shall be awarded to the Prior Club; rather, the selections next available will be transferred to the Prior Club (i.e., a Club that owes two (2) selections has them available in the next two (2) drafts – that is when they are transferred).
That was not information I knew. Nice catch.

That's why I just can't see him getting an offer sheet. It would have to be something ridiculous for the Leafs to let him walk, and the team making the offer, would have to not only pay the outrageous $$$, but part with 4 1st rounders as well. There are easier targets, if we see any offer sheets at all.

The whole Marner thing is going to come down to two things IMO...

1.) Does another team truly step up with a mammoth 13 per x 6 or 7

2.) Does Marner feel slighted enough by Toronto to actually sign such a deal

If so, Marner is a goner. The Leafs will be so disgusted in that scenario IMO, they let him walk, take the picks, and have an "out" as the fans in Toronto would turn on Marner and call him greedy.

    The Great One

Default Re: [Rumor] Marner is gone from TO

My hunch is that the Islanders are going to give Marner an offer of 13/14 million for 5 or 6 years. Leafs can't and won't match that.

It will make for interesting times in the NHL, with Islanders fans hating Tavares, and Toronto fans hating Marner. Seems only fitting that they'd trade teams with each other.

If Toronto had not given Tavares the big money, none of this situation would even be happening. The Leafs would easily be able to offer Marner whatever he wanted, and chances are he wouldn't even be looking for the kind of money or contract he is rumored to want.

    1) The word I used was “massive” not “mammoth”.

    2) I also said Marner hopes the Leafs won’t match the contract he will sign.

That’s the point of all this.

Is a mammoth not indeed massive?

Tavares was a luxury that the Leafs could have gone without, but how do you say no to a top player who wants to come to your team at a time where you are hoping to be a contender? I find it funny that stingy Lou will all of a sudden open the pocketbook and make what would be a massive overpay for Marner. He's the guy who didn't pay Marner his rookie bonus money, claiming he doesn't operate that way, only to then give it to Matthews the following year.

Man... has it been a week without a post in this thread?!?! WTF.
This is my entertainment here guys... feed me!!!

Note of the Day: So, I'm looking at the TOR cap situation on capfriendly a few minutes ago:
    https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/mapleleafs
22 Players on Roster (teams carry 23 in-season)

    $81.5m cap
    $70.5m committed
    ------
$11m available for that 23rd person.

I kind of wonder if Dubas intentionally wanted to sign up a bunch of $700k scrubs, simply to "fill" his roster...
So other GMs would gander over and say "Fugg... Doob has $11m available for one guy... damn it, let's no do the Marner thing."

Kind of a slick move, if that was his intention. Pure "optics" move, if it was... but still.
(Obv, a lot of these guys have two-way contracts... and Kerfoot and Ceci are RFA-arbs... but nonetheless, the roster shows 22 spots filled and $11m available. Slow. Clap.)

Gotta be aware that they won't (shouldn't) use his contract on LTIR until the season "starts". It's more beneficial as LTIR than "Off-season LTIR"

They can go 10% over the cap in the off-season, so they can hit 81.5 + Horton over the summer and then shift it to LTIR IN oCT.
