I’m guessing those phantom offer sheets would’ve been for 6-7 years at $10mill or less. If those details ever get leaked there will be no surprise as to why he didn’t sign them from a financial perspective.

I will say that (although it it is fairly obvious at this point) Paul Marner is one hell of a talker. For the last year at least he's been blabbing to practically anyone who'd listen to him about the contract situation (e.g., the OP in this thread, my brother-in law, Darren Dreger, etc.). Whether Paul is just a blow hard who likes to hear himself talk, or he was trying to set the media/public tone with the rumors he was spreading, this entire situation only further reinforces that you can't believe anything you read or hear. All the parties involved have their own agendas and will say pretty much anything to manipulate public opinion.

FWIW, although the OP's initial post could have been written with more discretion/grace, I have little doubt that what he wrote came directly what Paul.

I personally mentioned in this thread a few things that my brother-in law (who knows Paul) told me. Specifically, that Marner wanted a similar contract to Matthews and that he doesn't get along with Babcock. However, there are lots of other things that Paul said to my brother-in law that I didn't post due to the inflammatory nature of the comments. As the apparent stalemate continued and I heard more and more about what Paul was saying, I was worried that the contract negotiations would drag on for a long time. In the end, I'm glad Marner signed because I believe he is a good, humble kid and the NHL is a better league with Marner (and all the currently unsigned RFAs) playing hockey.

I mean. It's not hard to believe that Marner hates Babcock. Lots of players hate Babcock. It just never was believable that that is the reason that hometown kid Marner would leave TO, especially when Babcock probably is not long for the Leafs.
