Friedman said recently he's heard they're not too far apart on a short term deal.
I'll say it's done before end of August. 9.3 per year for 3 years. Book it.

Saw this on TSN (I think) which made a ton of sense.
3 year deal.
1st year $7.5 ($6.5 signing bonus)
2nd year $8.5 ($7.5 signing bonus)
3rd year $12.5
Marner collects $15 million in the first 12 months of his contract (2019 bonus, salary and 2020 bonus next July)
AAV is $9.5 (team friendly)
He’s still RFA by the end of it.
$12.5 is his qualifying offer at the end of 3 years
Marner becomes highest paid Leaf for atleast 3 years until AM34 re ups
He banks on himself and truly gets what he’s worth and can cash in again in 3 years OR... if he busts (unlikely) team can walk away from qualifying offer.
Makes Sense on both sides. Change my mind.

A deal like this makes total sense to me. I believe term is extremely important to Marner's camp. I don't think they want to give up any UFA years. Punting the issue down the road a bit and re-visiting this in three years makes a lot of sense. In the meantime, Marner gets a load of money and guarantees himself a huge raise at the end of this contract, while the Leafs get a "sort of" reasonable cap hit, considering what these RFAs seem to think they are worth anyway.

It does make sense. If it was me representing him, I'd want to get at least a small signing bonus payable every year with owner lockout shenanigans possible. Other than that, looks good.
