    Default Hard choices

    Hello everyone,

In a salary keeper fantasy, we need to protect 10 players each year. We have an expansion this summer and we protect only 9 players, the new GM will draft and we will afterward protect our 10th player.
    I have some player that I will keep without hesitation (no-brainer) : Pastrnak (6.7M$), Barkov (5.9M$), Chabot (0.9M$), Svechnikov (0.9M$), Keller (0.9M$), F. Andersen (5M$), and Aho (???).

I will probably protect Gostisbehere because of the rarity of cheap D-Man at 4.5M$
So, I still have one spot to protect before the expansion to select only one of those players :

    Erik Karlsson (???)
    Zach Werenski (???)
    Charlie McAvoy (???)
    Rickard Rakell (3.8M$)
    Patrick Kane (10.5M$)
    Jack Eichel (10M$)
    Kyle Connor (???)

    Do you have any preference?
An expectation of salary for Karlsson, Werenski and McAvoy?

    Thank you for your help

PS. If a rookie isn't activated during the season, we can protect them automaticaly. I don't need to protect Heiskanen, Strome and Hart
PSS. I won the lottery and have the 1st draft pick (J. Hughes)

Regardless of what these players will get. I protect Eichel here. In straight points... he's a top 25 player for the next decade.

    Karlsson's going to get paid,
Connor's working himself into high 6, maybe 7m territory
Kane's age & salary make leaving him unprotected, almost still protected
McAvoy, with his injuries to date... likely signs a bridge deal.
Werenski - he could be a great value contract and sign longer term as well
Rakell, wouldn't protect, his defunct year & the state of Anh should insulate him from expansion as well.

Bolded the most likely to be sniped from your team. If you don't protect Eichel... then he'd get bolded

    Karlsson 11M
    Werenski 5.5-6M
    McAvoy 5M
Connor 7.5M (or bridged @ 4-5ish for another 2-3 years - he's your keep if that's the case).

Assuming Aho gets 8.5M, that's about 33M tied up in your keepers. Out of 23 players, you're still under half of your cap for the keeper set if you keep Eichel, so I don't mind him.

You can probably keep Eichel and his $11 million contract. It hurts, but some players are worth it and I think Eichel is very close to being consistently a top 10 point-getter in the NHL. I'm sure most in your league won't hesitate to protect the likes of Kucherov, McDavid, Kane, Draisaitl, Stamkos, Crosby, etc. and all those guys are getting paid similar to Eichel. Eichel may not have scored as much as those others this past season, but there's a really good chance he will be with that group next year (he just needs to stay healthy!!).

I have this down to between Eichel & Karlsson. I suspect Eichel will be more wanted, so I'd protect him.

Karlsson may actually be the better value, but his price may scare the new owner away. I'd figure your 10th keeper is one of Kane, Karlsson, or Werenski. I doubt Werenski comes in cheaper than Gostisbehere, but he might, so be aware of that.

Yeah I will probably protect Eichel as my 9th protection slot, thank you for your opinion

Offensive and cheap defenceman are rare, so I will make my decision based on Werenski, McAvoy and Karlsson next contract.

I believe in bargains so I'd probably go with Rakell. Only problem is the team is crap.
Werenski is tempting depending on how much he signs for. Not sure if you have to make the decision before or after he signs. I could see him getting 6 mil per. Any higher and I'd say no but for 6 mil he's probably worth it.

Eichel is a great player but I'm hard pressed to believe he puts up enough points to warrant his cap hit. P Kane might be a better option if its viable to hold really prices superstars in your league setup.

We give our protection list July 15th, so yes I hope that he will sign before that at the same salary than Seth Jones (5.5m)
I agree with Rakell, it's a really nice bargain but team is so bad... Future first line can be Rakell-Steel-Comtois but they will be a good first line in what, 2-3 years?

I can't imagine that you'd lose Rakell in your expansion draft with the other options that you will have dangling.
