Default Jimmy Howard close to extension with Red Wings

One year extension around $4M. I wont lie, I really thought he was getting dealt at the trade deadline but now it looks like he's sticking around for one more season at least. He played well for the Wings this past year all things considered.

The Detroit Red Wings are nearing a one-year extension with goaltender Jimmy Howard, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

St. James reports the contract is “in the $4 million range.”

“I love playing for the Wings. My family loves living in Detroit. It’s very special,” Howard said after stopping 41 shots in a Red Wings win over the New York Rangers. “I’ll turn 35 here in a week and from there on out, I’m playing with one-year contracts.”

Howard’s current six-year, $31.75 million contract expires at the end of this season.

Both Howard and Red Wings GM Ken Holland told Dan Rosen of NHL.com that the contract will be made official once some final details are worked out.

Well....someone has to play net for them next year. Hopefully he can be dealt then.

I only see one problem with the news story attached.....

It's a good contract. My only bigger picture question is what happens with Patrik Rybar, who has been good in limited AHL action. He's not a prized prospect by any means but he's worth a shot considering he's young enough to be a multi-year solution if all goes well. More AHL experience makes most sense for him, though I wonder how long he'll stick around playing in the minors.

They should of kept Mrazek, but hey, what do I know?

I felt the same way. I get there was a bunch of baggage that led up to the trade and Mrazek had been playing poorly but if anyone in their organization had a decent shot of being a long-term #1 goalie it was Mrazek.

I guess that crosses off one option who could've landed in a plum spot like say Calgary.
