Default First ever baseball draft. Need help!

    8 teams H2H.

    18 players per team.

    1 Catcher
    1 1st Base
    1 2nd Base
    1 3rd Base
    1 Shortstop
    3 Outfield
    3 Utility
    7 Pitchers

I have never, ever done a fantasy baseball pool. I am lost. Any rankings I should find ?

    I have the #1 pick.

Other question, Should I draft Vlad Jr? If so, when ?

I usually use a combination of CBS and ESPN rankings. I make a spreadsheet and use an average and then adjust based on my preferences.

An exercise I always use is to take my rankings for each position and put a line after the total number of each position that will be drafted. So a line after the 8th SS, the 8th 3B and the 24th OF and the 56th pitcher. And see where the depth of the draft is.

With only 8 teams I think you would be best to focus on pitching early and settle for the later position players at SS, 3B and OF.

You have to draft Trout first overall.

And as for Vlad, I would not draft him. Injury and not guaranteed to play. You could probably get away with drafting him late and then stashing him on IR.

Thank you, will look at the CBS and ESPN rankings.

Sums up different rankings. It's a good starting point if you're not sure which rankings are the best.

I don't think I would inside the top 50-60. Once you get past that, probably worth going for it. That being said, your league is fairly shallow, so let's say don't draft him before 50 at the absolute earliest. Even then I would wait a little.

Here's a similar thread with some good thoughts for you as well:

Is your league seven pitchers, no designation between starter and reliever?
Also, does your league have no bench?

Welcome to the marathon that is fantasy baseball!

The rankings posted above are a great start and EB asked a pretty good question about pitchers there....

I wouldn't say "don't draft Vlad" but I will say "Don't draft Vlad with your 1st overall pick!" He's someone I'd look at later in the draft. I doubt he will even start the year in the bigs because the Jays will want to protect that extra year of control.

I agree with looking at varying rankings and going with some sort of combo. The best advice I can give you is to make a plan and stick to it. Don't reach for guys just to reach for guys (ie Vlad).

I would draft one of Mike Trout or Mookie Betts with that 1st overall pick and go with your plan from there.
10 Team, Points Only, Cash League

25 Man Roster (no position), top 20 point getters count at end of month
Keep 20/25 at seasons end, Cut 5 to FA for redrafting
    Goalie points W=2pt L=-1pt SHO=2pt

Stamkos, Tavares, Eichel, Mercer, JRobertson, RThomas, Kucherov, Nugent-Hopkins, Tuch, KConnor, Necas, Point, Konecny, SJarvis, Cozenz, Morrissey, Bouchard, Josi, Novak, Tolvanen, Peterka, Brink

    G- Vasilevskiy, Sorokin, Oettinger

I don't think he was ever considering drafting Vlad Jr first overall - they were separate questions.

I'm usually conservative with rookies so I wouldn't draft him around 60 but others would.

Another thing to remember, in general, is that in a H2H league, you want guys to be strong in the second half and leading into the playoffs. So don't shy away from getting guys who may fall in the draft due to injury. You want them to peak in the second half. E.g. Lindor will likely fall and wouldn't hesitate if he's available at pick 16 (your second pick). He was arguably a top 4 pick before the injury.

    So far

    Mike Trout,OF #1 overall
    Trea Turner, SS #16 overall
Justin Verlander , SP #17 overall
    Carls Carrasco #32 overall
    Andrew Benintendi, OF ,#33 overall

    I guess I should draft a 1B 2B C or 3B with my next picks...

Again... I would make a line on my rankings after the 8th best for each of the positions and see where the depth is and see where you should be drafting next.

I would not draft a Catcher next unless Realmuto has slipped significantly, which I doubt he is available.

I would look for anothe SP and then probably a 2B or OF in my next two picks.
