As an owner of MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Makar I'm super excited to see what the three of them can do together once Makar really gets rolling. I can keep him as a minors player for two full NHL seasons before I have to fit him into my ten keepers and by that point (if not even sooner) I'd expect Barrie to be out of the way.

At that point it will be Makar's blueline for the foreseeable future and the thought of the three of them on the same powerplay PLUS whichever high end prospect the Avs are about to land from the Ottawa pick... Exciting times coming in Colorado's future.

I tried to get Hughes in my league too but his owner wouldn't budge. His upside is just as high as Makar's and he has the benefit of a quicker path to that top PP spot. He will most likely get off to the faster start of the two but once they are both established you can't really go wrong with either guy.

Next year, I'd go Makar (assuming he signs), Hughes, then Brannstrom just due to the quality of the guys each is feeding the puck to.

Long-term, I think I'd put Hughes at one, and then flip a coin on the other two, but not much gap between the three.

    The Great One

Default Re: Top Upside - Brannstrom, Hughes, Makar

Hughes, Makar, Brannstrom...both short and long-term.

All three are great, but I list Brannstrom last because he will forever be behind Chabot and Ottawa isn't going to score a lot of even strength goals. Brannstrom is not going to score many points, unfortunately. Hughes and Makar are both going to be the top option for both teams.

FWIW, Chris Peters (ESPN+) had Makar, Hughes as his #1, #2 prospects right now, in that order.

I don't think Tyson Barrie is in the long-term future of Colorado.
They either trade him to get something back... or lose him as UFA in 2020.

    Key reasons why:
    1. Barrie is a rightie.
    So is Makar...
So is Erik Johnson... signed thru 2023.
Teams do prefer to have a little balance in handedness of their D.

    2. Barrie also seems like the type that will want to go to free agency.
And I'd guess there WILL BE a team willing to give Barrie a Shatty-level overpayment on a long-term deal.

    3. Barrie was drafted in 2009.
Sakic has been the GM since 2013.
GMs like to take credit for EVERY piece possible on the club.
    Barrie is not a Sakic-piece... thus, buh-bye.

So... Makar should likely be patrolling a 4F:1D Colorado PP1 into the future.
    MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, ______, Makar.
I mean... wow... and that ______... could be Jack Hughes. So... there's that.

Just gonna throw Sergachev back into the conversation here. 40 points as a rookie D-man. I'm a bit surprised people don't see him at the same level as these three, but that's why we start these threads...

    My ranking would be:

    Makar
    Hughes
    Serg
    Brannstrom
    20tm UFA/RFA dynasty

    Cats: G, A, SOG, STpts, +/-, hits/bs, GAA, Sv%, W+SO

I'd love to see these rankings by Peters, but they aren't available in my country (Canada). Really?

Hughes probably steps in to the best situation, but I like both Makar and Brannstrom a bit more. I’d probably go:

    Makar
    Brannstrom
    Hughes

    They’re really close tho.

    My ranking would be:

    Makar
    Hughes
    Serg
    Brannstrom
Sergachev biggest problem is named Hedman. Similarly, werenski's biggest problem is named Jones.

Opportunity is so key for defensmen when it comes to putting up points. Without PP1 there's only so much a guy can produce. When it comes to projecting fantasy d men, deployment is just as (if not more) important than ability/skill.

Hence Hughes could easily be at the top of this list in a few seasons simply because he has the easiest path to top pairing and pp1, not because he's the best offensive d man on this list.
