Morgan Rielly investigated for homophobic slur towards Ref

The NHL announced it is launching an investigation into a "homophobic slur" used during the Maple Leafs matchup with the Lightning on Monday night.

Toronto forward Morgan Rielly was caught on mic in the second period, and appeared to call the referee a, "f---ing f-----," as he skated down the ice.

Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas released a statement on Monday night.

"The Club is aware of the reports surrounding a homophobic slur used during the Maple Leags versus Lighting game on Monday night." Dubas said. "The issue of homophobia is one the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club strongly condems and takes very seriously. We are in communication with the NHL and are cooperating fully with their office.

The NHL has handled a similar incident before. Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was suspended one playoff game in April 2016 after shouting an anti-gay slur from the penalty box.

Rielly has been with Toronto since entering the NHL in 2013. He has 49 career goals and 187 assists. The Maple Leafs are third in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division at 42–21–5.

So it was on that SHG against the Leafs. Morgan Rielly is skating his own blue line with the puck on his backhand, tries to dump it in deep, but is hooked and kinda fans on it. TBL ices it, Morgan Rielly skating back to the puck sees Sparks kinda go out to play it (and the 4 other Leafs), so Morgan Rielly turns to the ref to "voice his displeasure" on the missed call. Turns back to the play and realizes that Sparks isn't playing it, and TBL is about to get the puck.

That's how I saw it. In my eyes, he 100% said it, but there's enough cameras out there that will definitely show him moving his lips.

Like 4 yrs ago or something Rielly was talked to about his language when he said something along the lines of "we gotta show up for work and try hard, we aren't girls".

It's also a homophobic slur, not racial.

There's Leafs twitter accounts that have done stupid twitter detective work and they've been placing subtitles on the video links and trying to make you think he's saying effing "Rag it". In my eyes, he's not saying "rag it".

Before he's even at the red line, he's yelling "effing hook" then when he's at the blue line he says the term in question. If it's the mics picking up a fan yelling it, that fan is moving with Rielly then because the mics at the red line pick up the same voice as the blue line.

They'll ask the ref, see a camera angle from ice level on Morgan Rielly, and put 2 and 2 together. This is gonna be a pretty cut and dry case I think.

You can see in a video after TBL is celebrating the goal, Rielly is getting up from his knees and a fan yelling "it's your fault Nylander" and it sounds the same as the "****ing F##$$%" voice... so I dunno.
