Default The NHL and Marijuana [ESPN Article]

Really good article by ESPN on how the NHL is approaching Marijuana use and it's current policy. Cliff Notes: the league watches all players for "drugs of abuse" (pot, cocaine etc.) but those found using are helped rather than punished.

So essentially the league watches/tests players, but don't actually care what results are found when it relates to weed/cocaine.

They've known since at least 2015 they've had a coke issue across the league, but just throw their hands in the air and say "oh well".

    NHL management at it's finest.

Everyone's going to have a different opinion on this but they appear to be taking an approach that if it's not performance enhancing, then it's not cheating. There are real people underneath those helmets with real problems. Maybe the league is on to something here.

Take a look at the Swiss legalizing heroin and how that's worked out for them, and they are generally a very conservative culture.

What I'm getting at is, if they truly cared about their players, they would force the player to get help. What they're currently doing is, identifying a problem and saying we're here to help if you want help, but won't go out of our way to actually help you.

Now, obviously weed isn't something someone needs "help" for, but coke on the other hand is something they should probably step in and do something about. Again, It's the NHL and I don't think they truly care about their players, it's more about saving face.

Didn't the NHL Alum Association get approval to test out CBD to help treat retired players issues? Like depression, pain management, anxiety and what not?

I find that a big step forward as if a retired player has beneficial pain management results with CBD, it would be rolled out into the NHL...eventually.

I'm not against this stance at all except there's a big difference here. One is a government and the other is a sports league with teams that pay players for results.
