    Default Vasili Podkolzin

Here's my very long but hopefully helpful article about Vasili Podkolzin who is a projected top 5 pick in the summer. I went through his strengths and weaknesses, and I also reviewed his performance in different leagues and tournaments. On top of all that, I also included a lot of videos for those who haven't watched them yet.

I'm not overly hopeful he'll fall to me at pick #10 but still nice to read

    John Matisz✔@MatiszJohn

Vasili Podkolzin met with 19 teams this week at the combine. Says through a translator that his plan is to come to the NHL after his KHL contract expires (2020-21). Asked if he belongs in the conversation for top 5 pick, Podkolzin says he'll be happy to go anywhere in 1st round.

    Ben Pope@BenPopeCST

Podkolzin (through translator) said he talked with 19 teams this week, including #Blackhawks. Very emphatic that he plans to come to NHL in 2 years, when KHL contract ends.

He seemed eager to talk to media despite the language barrier and I came away impressed.

Two more Podkolzin notes: - Grew 3/4 of an inch and 6.5 pounds this season - Disappointed with play in World Juniors

I'm very excited to see where he gets drafted. He could be a real nice fantasy asset in a couple of years.

I'm torn on him. In a Hits/PIM league, he seems like he'd be the #3 rookie pick, at minimum. All reports I see have him as a hitting monster. But at the same time, he's characterized as someone who is always max effort. We like the effort but I've got hesitation that he can raise his game in the NHL if he's already giving it everything he's got. I worry that he'll be an energy 3rd liner who chips in with more scoring than a normal 3rd liner, with maybe PP2 time.

I feel like I want to take him 3rd ov. Everything I read/watch makes me believe he'll be a great multicat asset in a few years.

Should I be looking at Turcotte/Zegras/Dach instead?

Podkolzin has drive/determination you can't teach. Plays at a high tempo. Good passer, good shooter (both can be improved). With some consistency in coaching he has the chance to really round out his game.

He may not be the safest pick.. but very intriguing and seems to ha e as much upside as anyone not in the top 2.

I think Pods is the clear #3 in multi-cat leagues if you can wait two seasons. He looks like a bulldog to the eye-test and his numbers should be taken in context that he's still only 17, bouncing around all three leagues in Russia, and fulfilling international obligations that few 17 year-olds are asked to do, Russian or not.

Power-forwards take longer to develop anyway. The next 2 years at (hopefully only) the KHL level should do him well. Regardless, I expect him to have a strong World Juniors tournament this winter which should drive up his perceived value among prospects.

It's going to be interesting to see where he goes in this year's draft. He could go anywhere from 3rd overall to one of this year's biggest dropper .

Seems like a perfect landing spot, in my opinion. He's got a lot of individual skills, but his NHL future may be best suited in sort of a hard working two-way complementary player in the top six that can provide the yin to Pettersson/Boeser's yang. Think Kunitz prime years with Crosby as far as upside.

Where would you put him amongst this years draft class in a league that counts G-4, A-2, PIM-0.5, SOG/HIT/BLKS-0.25. I have the 5th pick and expecting Hughes/Kakko/Caufield to go before me based off the managers. I was initially leaning Turcotte/Zegras with my pick, or would Podkolzin be that much more valuable in this format?

Turcotte if he's there. After that I'd hesitate between Podkolzin or Cozens

Really eh? His peripherals are enough to pass on the potential offense of Zegras? I feel like he can get to the show quicker to.
