No one should argue against Sabbath!
I think Clutch and The Rheostatics did it, but likely too obscure to be considered.
Prolly shouldn't mention RA now cause stuff.
I submit for appraisal... Wilco. The evolution of the band expressing the same true self at the same time was exquisite.

The first four are masterpieces, and the fifth, although a comparative step down, is still great.
Honorable mention to Husker Du (Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, Flip Your Wig, Candy Apple Grey, Warehouse: Songs and Stories) and Sonic Youth (EVOL, Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty)

I'm not sure if anyone else here is a fan but I'm throwing Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds name in here
Tender Prey
The Good Son
Henry's Dream
Let Love In
Murder Ballads
The Boatman's Call
Henry's Dream is the weak one in my opinion but giving it some thought I only consider it good not great compared to the others. In a vacuum it's great.
AV Club had good article on this a few years back.
Queen and REM are two favourite groups of mine that I'd include... but understand if others would not.
Author does a good job of going through by decade:
60s: Includes The Kinks, The Byrds, and The Who
70s: Includes Led Zeppelin, Queen, Neil Young, Springsteen, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, and Cheap Trick
80s: REM, U2, Replacements
Then it gets harder & subjective in the 90s, when one would need to know more indie groups like Yo La Tengo and Wilco.
Author mentions Kanye West in 2000s... but that's not rock.
Though... this author qualifies as "very good"... not "excellent"... so you can weed some of these out by one's own definition of "excellent".
And then at the end the author tries to make an argument for Fountains of Wayne - which I can't say I know behind the two poppy hits most of us heard on radio... so... IDK.
But thought I'd throw this one out for discussion.
Great thread!!!
