Quelle surprise. They have been brutal this past month and have nothing in the prospect pipeline to be overly excited about except for maybe Steel.
Just got a notification from the score. Ducks fire Randy Carlyle.

They've been relying too heavily on the same aging forwards year after year and this year they aged quite rapidly. That said, there's also several players who underachieved at the same time, hence the firing.

I cannot believe that the GM, Bob Murray, is going to take over as head coach for the rest of the season. I know that they fully intend on making Dallas Eakins (the head coach of their AHL squad) the next head coach so Murray is just a placeholder, but the trade deadline is 18 days away and now he's going to spend time coaching. I cannot believe that this goes well, which is fine, they should probably tank the season, but how does this help him do his actual job as GM?
They have been negotiating with Jakob Silfverberg all season. Either they are giving him an extension, or they are trading him. This should be the priority over the next few weeks. After the deadline? Fill your boots. Before the deadline, they should be putting their resources to the appropriate place. Just weird, and I assume it's to save a buck by not spending on an interim coach.
good one randy... good one.
i dont like that the GM will take over coaching duties. His priorities should be elsewhere and there are plenty of better options than him running the bench.

I don't like it anytime a GM goes behind the bench. Makes no sense to me. Make the assistant coach the interim head coach and focus on your job. Odds are if you fire your coach, you're going to be busy trying to find his replacement and upgrade your team.
Surprised it took this long.

I'm also surprised that Murray hasn't been fired. The prospect pool on this team is brutal and the 8 trades he's made this season are just moving deck chairs around. Their cap situation is also dire. Each of Getzlaf, Perry, and Kesler have NMCs and, at least with the latter two, are grossly overpaid with terms ending in 2021. The only bright spots on the team as far as salaries are concerned are Rakell, Kase, and Gibson. Otherwise, this roster and the team's cap management is really a tire fire that'll burn for a long time.

After these last weeks it must actually come as a relief to Carlyle. Agree that a GM behind the bench doesn’t work. This isn’t the nfl or the nhl of the 1950s and even then...
Here's my fantasy take on the Carlyle firing:

I figured they'd just wait it out until the end of the year to do this. Not sure why firing him now makes any sense but whatever. This season is already pooched.

About time.
Not sure why they waited so long... And because they did wait so long it's pretty much over for them this year anyway. Might as well leave Carlyle in charge and finish in a lottery spot.
The team is full of vets and their best youngster is injured. They probably aren't as bad next season with a fresh coach. Good candidate to bounce back next season. I'll be looking to draft some late round ducks in September.

IR (2 max):
Murray received an extension through 2021-22 earlier this season so his job was never in jeopardy. Randy Carlyle's contract was up at the end of this year so he'd have been replaced anyway you'd figure. That also likely explains why the GM is now filling in as coach. Still thinks it's dumb, but I don't think there's much taste to spend double on off-ice contracts.
