We're about to see a bunch of people guy big contracts as their first with the RFA's coming up.

If the likes of Rantanen, Aho, Point and others get like 4mill/yr for 8yrs, then we can scoff at this contract. But anyone who thought Matthews was getting less than EIchel is an idiot.

I get the point, but is this suppose to mean you should pay for optimistic possible future production?

I think your Google translate must be on the fritz...
I know what it refers to. I was being literal on purpose. Tongue in cheek missed. It was said in an earlier post. Not sure why I would need google translate? Was something written in another language that I missed?

I don’t get the joke, literal or cheeky. If you see my previous post the google translate comment was nothing to do with you.

Interesting that someone would think it's actually better for the team to have Matthews for only 5 years instead of 8...

Well, it's better for the Coyotes obviously. They get him sooner. But for the Leafs? 8 years would have been so much better but it would have been much more expensive as well. $14M? Somewhere around there I'd guess.

If Matthews signed 8yrs, 13-14mill per, you would comment on how it was too much.

Whatever...people will always dislike contracts in the NHL.

It’s better for the team to have him for 5 vs 8 yrs because they can now afford to sign other players...you know, try to build a contending team. Yes it would be great to buy 3 more years of his UFA time and have him locked up for 8 but at what cost? Marner? Some depth guys? A couple of Kappanen, Johnsson, Dermot? Maybe Chiarelli would be your guy if you could hire a GM to run your team. But I prefer to see non-morons running NHL teams. There are many shades of distinction when evaluation the compromise that is an NHL contract with many facets. Both the player and the team got what they needed here. It’s a clear win for both. Duh.

It's funny how 90% of the population thinks players win these negotiations with the Leafs but 100% of Leafs fans think they're win-win deals.

Oh I’m not a Leafs fan. I’m all Habs baby. But I also understand how a budget (née salary cap) works and how a guy has to spend his money in such a way that all bases are covered and at the end of the day I get everything paid for. Explain in detail how an 8 yr/13.5-14mil AAV deal is a bigger win for the Leafs. It’s one thing to not be a Leafs homer but see the reality here and entirely another to be a hater.

well, the population thinks in 5years Matthews is bolting, he might, but he might not - not if he wants to win Cups anyway. Cuz he won't in Arizona.

But as far as being a win-win. AM gets paid now. 2nd highest paid player in the NHL.
He also becomes a UFA at 26 and gets the opportunity for a full 8 year max value deal.
It's a win for Tor - because they save $2m per season over the next 5,
which they will desperately need for Marner & soon to be Rielly (who's going to get paid)

I always figured a sense of humor was pretty subjective and either you have it or you don’t. You can’t really “work on it”. Sorry about your luck.

Dubas caved and lost to Nylander so he had to cave and lost to Matthews.

But FWIW, yes Matthews at $14 for 8 years and trading Nylander would have been better than this contract.
