In my main dynasty, we keep rights to players who go overseas if they are on the roster when the go overseas. We get to exercise the option when they return. deadline is before the season starts, or (I think) 1 weeks after they return in season.

It's most often relevant for true stars, but sometimes a Nichuskin level comes back, and it matters. If he comes back, I think I will have to use the option and roster him.

I'd really rather start to see rumours his teammate is looking at moving over to the NHL.... a Gusev to NHL thread... now that would be exiting news

Indeed it would. He is FA in my league.

This might be happening. Wonder if he has enough left to make an impact beyond mentoring. With all that youth in DET it makes sense to bring in a high-profile veteran, just curious how much fantasy value he will have.

    Our two most recent examples:

Jagr - was able to make an impact and mentor.
Kovalchuk - not sure if he is doing either over in LA.

I would consider Datsyuk to be more like Jagr... so I expect him to make to be able to be both if put in the right situations.

Their cap situation is not great to begin with so not sure how this plays out in Detroit. They have so many multi-year deals on vets that can also do "mentoring" and stuff. How many of those are needed?

I still expect him to sign and retire with his hometown Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg but the note that Datsyuk is coming to Michigan may mean he hasn't made up his mind where he wants to play next year.

Wouldn't Yzerman need permission from the 'Yotes to speak to him though?

I would say that he has as much fantasy value as most 41-year-old players, little-to-none except for in the deepest of leagues.

Love Datsyuk, but I’d prefer to remember him for the player he was before he left. I think today’s NHL would just be too fast for him.

Okay this is 100% a guess.... but when he left there was only one year remaining on his contract? So wouldn't he be considered a free agent?

The reason I think this is because of the Kovalchuk situation. If he came back two summers ago, his rights would have had to been traded by the New Jersey Devils. Fast forward to last summer and New Jersey didn't need to trade his rights. This makes me think that his contract must have 'expired'.

So if Datysuk only had one year remaining on his contract, wouldn't that be the similar situation as Kovalchuk being able to come back as a free agent?

And similarly, Radulov, was he able to come back as a free agent? Or did Nashville have to trade his rights?

I'm confused about the details and why but Datsyuk becomes a UFA on July 1st. The Coyotes own his rights until then. Datsyuk, like Kovalchuk, didn't actually honour that contract so the teams keeps his rights for an extended period?
