It's debatable whether or not Rask actually provides security at C
This is what I was just about to bring up. I think MIN is expecting Staal to walk to a better contender in the offseason (WPG? - he's from Thunder Bay). Coming up in the system they seem to have mostly wings and D as well, so I don't mind the move for them with that in mind.
I still agree Nino is the better player, but MIN filled a position of need, and shed cap in doing so. There have been worse one-for-one trades.

Man... no one thinks Rask can take off even remotely like Lindholm did in Cgy? I agree that Carolina gets the better end of the deal - especially with getting a 2-way forward. Should also open a door for Necas to come up, maybe sooner rather than later from the AHL.
But end of last year, summer - Rask was expected to finally break out 55+. Maybe not this year... but just a fresh start. Staal a UFA, Koivu 1 year left - definitely fills a soon to be gap for them.
Gut feeling, I'll be targeting Rask in 19/20 drafts & re-drafts.

To me this one is very simple. Two teams exchanged underachievers (a common thing in the NHL these days - copycat league) and the Wild acquiring Aberg justified moving Nino's scoring. This is short-term gambling on everyone's part, hoping for a better result with the new pieces.

Aberg has been waived by 2 teams not currently in a playoff spot already this year. I don't think the Wild should be counting on him for anything. The Wild have been dressing 7 or 8 natural centers for most games so I don't think they needed another one.
