    Generational goal-scorer? Absolutely. Best goal-scorer ever? Probably, at least I think so. Best multi-cat fantasy player of his lifetime? Probably. Generational player? No. His all-around game just wasn't at that level. If I was given a chance to choose between 18-year-old Crosby and Ovechkin to build my team around one of them, it's Crosby and not even close.

    Is this a joke? These requirements for what defines a generational talent are a bit extreme. Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux, Orr(how can you leave Orr off a generational talent list - GOAT at a position that is required in to play the game) - no mention of Sawchuk whatsoever and how he defined the position - best goalie, possibly better than Brodeur - did you even see his scarred face pictures? Possibly one of the most eerie of any hockey photo? Brodeur - ok - there are the really easy ones.

    1) Jagr is the #2 points leader all time and put up 70+ at the age of 38 or something - no question here - in fact - if he didn’t take off those years to play KHL and didn’t have 2 lockout shortened seasons what happens? Or did you forget he missed almost 3 years to that - potentially an additional 120+ goals and 250+ points. Plus his prime was in the “dead puck” trap era and not the 8-5 high scoring 80’s.
    2) Lidstrom - 7 norrisÂ’ trophyÂ’s - best defenseman of his generation without any question. He stands way above any other defenseman in that regard. He could score and play D. Seems obvious here
    3) Yzerman/Messier - he dgaf about this list because he is selfless and the definition of a leader/captain and his 3 Cups. Not to mention theyÂ’re #7 and #4 on the all time points list;
    4) Crosby - Talent and cups + consistency w/o a doubt put him here;
    5) Ovetchkin - Greatest goal scorer of all time probably - although IÂ’d like to see him and Jagr in his prime face off.

    My thoughts are - if you have at least 1 Stanley Cup and are in the Top 10 of scoring all time - itÂ’s likely youÂ’re a generational talent. If youÂ’re a defenseman, I agree it gets a bit harder to judge which is why maybe Orr and Lidstrom are the only ones. Goaltending is a similar scenario - w/o question Sawchuk and Brodeur fit the mold - Hasek may be close in that he was extremely dominant and took over games - not sure on him.

    Sure you can debate, Sacic, Brett Hull, Ray Bourque, Roy, Dionne, Lafleur, Dryden, Esposito, Bobby Hull, Beliveau and Plante as well.

    As for McDavid? Time will tell - heÂ’s way too young to discuss now

    Can you do me a favor and also quote what the tweet says. Not everyone has twitter on the forums so by quoting more than just the link, it allows everyone to know what you are trying to share. Thank you.

    Its a tweet about Pettersson getting point 50 in 45 games. Ovi, Crosby and Malkin are the only ones to do that. Funny how he's saying a tweet where one of the 3 are not considered "generational".

    I love stats. Pettersson is one of 3 rookies to have 50 points in his first 45 NHL games.

    He's also one of 161 players ever to have 50 or more points in their 20 year old season. That list includes such names as Eric Daze, Steve Kasper, Simon Gagne, Sergei Samsonov and Sylvain Turgeon. If Petterrson were to get 161 more points this season, he would tie Gretzky's record for points in your 20 year old season.

    Correction: Petterson, Ovi, Crosby and Malkin are the only rookies to do it in the last 25 years by their age 20 season. That is an oddly specific stat.

    Writer of the weekly Top 10 column.

    12-team Keeper pool, straight points for forwards & dmen. Goalies get: 2 points per win, 3 per shutout, 1 point per assist & 1 point per shootout loss.

    League champ in 2013, 2015 and 2018.

    Top 8 forwards, 5 dmen and 2 goalies count.

    We keep 15 players (any position) plus two rookies.

    Forwards: Kopitar, Voracek, E. Staal, Marchessault, Granlund, Couturier, Guentzel, Pettersson, Dadonov, Glass, Dube, Necas, Andersson, Ho-Sang

    Ya, stats can be fun. But every stat needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

    How about the 25yr old Zibanejad stat of "having more points than Pettersson" in the season 2018-19? Zib is generational then right? He was a 6th overall pick, and Pettersson was 5th. Makes total sense right?

    He's scoring at an unsustainable 26.6 shooting %, and he hasn't even player a full season.

    Let's pump the breaks a little on the generational tag.

    Agreed and I'd go so far to say full stop on the generational tag. The ones proclaiming generational are typically excited Vancouver fans with blinders on.

    We can revisit this thread in 10 years and have a much better idea of whether he will be considered generational. My money is on the 'under'.

    I'd have ovi in there for sure. probably jagr too. I'd hold off on McDavid. we've had scares with others where career ending injuries can happen. tough to rank a generational talent for a guy in his forth year playing.
