The assistant GM that was fired was apparently the head of scouting since 2007 (or at least spear headed it).

Holmgren said this week the next general manager will decide Hakstol's fate. Holmgren had few solid answers this week as to why he made the move, other than to repeatedly call Hextall "unyielding." - TSN
If Holmgren wanted Hakstol gone, Hextall should have done it. Its better for the team to lose Hakstol, but keep Hextall. If management asked Hextall to sell youth for a guy like Mike Smith, Hextall did the right thing standing his ground.
Hextall said he took a three-stage approach toward trying to build a contender: clean up the salary-cap mess left behind by Holmgren, his predecessor; watch prospects grow as a team; make a big splash through free agency or a trade when the Flyers were close to "go time."
"I didn't feel we were at go-time," Hextall said. - TSN
I agree with that. Its definitely not go-time. I was hoping to be better this year, but I was happy with Hextall's job and his strategy. He was trying to build slow, which would produce a top team for many years. I hope they dont undo all of this work. It would make the last four years meaningless. FFS... I think Hakstol should be getting more out of the current group, but Hextall maybe sees it differently.
I'm still a little bit pissed off. I'll be more pissed if the new GM waltzes in and makes stupid trades straight away.
Been offline here this week but just wanted to add I'm also shocked by this one. Agree with Atomic in that I thought Hakstol would go before Hextall. They have a solid young core in Philly .....just missing that goalie to hold them over until Hart comes.
The Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News is reporting Chuck Fletcher has the GM job. The article is behind a paywall.
Source: Chuck Fletcher to be named Flyers GM
When did Fletcher play for the Flyers? Oh wait... he never?? This is the first time since 1990 its not an 'old boy' as the general manager. Interesting.
Not happy with this move after seeing what he left behind in Minnesota.
But hopefully he learned from his passed and doesn't make the same mistakes.
Fletcher. whoop-de-doo/10
There is a silver lining though - no Nonis. And 'Fletch' is a solid movie.
Flyers may have downgraded at the GM position and still have Hakstol as HC and Lappy running the PK...hard to say. I just hope he manages the cap well. Hextall managed to get out of the cap hell left to him, really improved the farm, and [for the majority] made good trades and signing. I would've liked to given him a bit longer to fix some holes.
On the flip side, if we're headed to win now mentality, hopefully it's exciting while it lasts...

Quick and Crawford would be on Fletchers radar to make instant success.
Quick - 5.8mill, 4more years after this one. Will be 37yrs old when deals done. (Doesn't have a NMC, or a NTC)
Crawford - 6mill, 1 more yr after this one. Will be 35yrs old when deals done. MNTC (10 team trade too list)

The big decision for the Flyers is how to time Carter Hart.
He's in Pro Year #1 in the AHL.
I'd think most keen GMs are looking to get 1.5-2.5yrs of AHL experience for their "Goalie of the Future".
Elliott/Neuvirth expire this year.
That means they're looking for a patch #1 veteran goalie thru 2020, or maybe thru 2021, but not further.
