Sure. The biggest difference is the result. You still had a much bigger goon chasing a player all over the ice for a prolonged period of time in an attempt to physically exact revenge. This time, it was fine. If it becomes a regular occurence, eventually you’re going to have another bad result.

No. They should have suspended Lucic for the play itself, which had shades of Todd Bertuzzi and is the type of play the NHL really doesn’t want entering back into the game.

2 separate points:

1) Yes he should be suspended. He clipped Boyle's head.

2) Lol wut? This is nothing like what Lucic did. Boyle had literally just played the puck. Lucic chased a player all over the ice with the only intent of exacting revenge from a previous play. What universe are you from where these are similar plays? How can people be such a homer to not be able to separate out the fact that a player chasing another player all over the ice just to hurt him is a bad thing, even if the end result was not bad?

Agreed, not even close to the same.

The DoPS repeatedly states in its headshot videos that the hitters need to choose the best angle to throw the hit and considering that Boyle didn't significantly change direction or body position as he played the puck the onus is on Buff to lay a clean hit and he didn't. Boyle also had just played the puck and was eligible to be hit.

As far as the lead up to each hit goes these incidents are "apples to oranges". The Lucic hit was predatory and outside of the game play on an ineligible player while Buffs was a poorly timed timed hit on an eligible player. The only thing similar is that both are illegal.

Yet another embarrassing decision from DoPS when they didn't suspend Lucic for this. Lucic clearly knew he would never ever catch Joseph for a legal hit after which he could rough him up a bit, so his options were to catch him when he isn't expecting it or wait until he's off the ice. I think both of those things deserve a suspension.

Fair enough, and yes. Neither type of hit is acceptable.

Not sure if Buff will get suspended but his hit is one the NHL had been trying to discourage and purge from the game for a few years so a 1 game ban wouldn't surprise me. It's been decades since chasing someone around the ice like Lucic did has been considered part of the game and should've been handled in a stricter way.
