The DFS Throwback Thursday October 25th

Match-Up Spotlight:
With the ten game slate, there are several games to look at. The Philadelphia Flyers face the Boston Bruins in what is expected to be one of the highest event games of the night. These are two teams that can shoot the puck a lot. New Jersey and Nashville is another game where scoring should be elevated. Do not sleep on the Pittsburgh-Calgary and Washington-Edmonton games either.
Boston’s first line and Dallas may appear to be chalky on the surface. Washington has the strongest man advantage potential. Watch out for teams on the back end of a back to back. Risk may be worth the reward but could dud. All prices are from DraftKings.
Top Budget Plays

Centers

Nolan Patrick $3600 – The center is a decent play at the least. However, playing against Boston’s depth lines should be advantageous. It is tough to roster a player who struggles at times. However, this has value as Patrick plays 16+ minutes a night. Boston has moderate potential to allow three goals. Patrick carries risk despite the fact he has scored in two straight games (low shot volume). Look to some depth like Brandon Sutter and maybe even Travis Zajac (if he plays).

Wingers

Vinnie Hinostroza $3400 – This is one of the riskiest GPP plays of the night. No one is saying this will work perfectly but the winger does see power play time and that is essential. His shot volume is around 2.6 shots per contest. Vancouver will be on the back end of a back to back. This could be a late hammer pick with well less than 5% ownership. There are several other choices out there as well. Anthony Duclair, Miles Wood, and maybe Scott Laughton could be wingers that one can stock their rosters with as one-offs to spend up later.

Defensemen

Zach Bogosian $3500 –There may be better plays like Damon Severson even, but Bogisian could be a nice punt play for a low price. His floor is solid (shots and blocked shots combined). Risk always exists with value plays, but Bogosian has looked better in the last few games. Both teams are going to have options with an expected over/under of six. A ihh event outcome carries a moderate chance of occurring This may be a chance to sneak a value play in. With this ten game slate, there is a little more value.

Goalie

Juuse Saros $7500 – This is a cheap GPP/cash play, but this is a Nashville team that comes off blowing a two-goal lead against San Jose. Saros was complicit in this as he yielded five goals overall. With Pekka Rinne still out, things do not get any easier. New Jersey can score with the best of them and their top line is one of the most dangerous at creating chances per 60. Can the Predators bounce back even if they allow 30+ shots on the road? Thursday night will be a show me night for this tournament play.

Since we saved some money on the budget plays let’s look at the few of the pricey options that are worth paying up for today.

Centers

Connor McDavid $7900 – People know this is a chalky play that still has to be used in quite a few lineups. The center has a solid matchup against Washington. This is a Capitals team which does allow some chances to top lines. McDavid has a high shot output floor. He will draw good match-ups and a shaky penalty kill of late. Edmonton and Washington could be high scoring. Edmonton and Washington will have a number of plays. Points per dollar is projected to be around $1200. That may be low. There is decent stacking potential in this game involving power play stacks.

Wingers

Patrick Kane $7500 – Kane has eight goals in nine games on 48 shots on goal. He draws a prime matchup against the New York Rangers, who yield 30+ shots a night. High-danger chances are plenty to be had also. The Rangers penalty kill is in the top ten among most chances allowed. Alex DeBrincat is a solid alternative if one wants to spend a little lower. However, Kane will go mostly against depth Rangers defensemen all night. That is hard to pass up at a $1200 per point range.

Defenseman

John Carlson $6800 – Again this will be high risk in cash or even GPP’s but Edmonton can easily allow four or even five goals on a given night. Carlson has points in three straight games and 13 points in eight contests overall. That includes eight power play points. Kris Letang and John Klingberg are other good plays along with Ryan Suter. Plenty of defensive options exist for pretty good prices among the first and second tiers of defense. Look to Neal Pionk, now that he has seemed to garner man advantage time. His price is right around DraftKings average, but the assists (six) and floor (14 shots and blocked shots each) is getting harder to ignore.

Goalie

Devan Dubnyk $8300 – There may be better choices, but this has potential to work well. The Los Angeles Kings do have some trouble with Minnesota at times from a goals standpoint. Dubnyk is a rhythm goalie who thrives on seeing a large volume of shots and chances. There are goalies like Corey Crawford and Ben Bishop on the slate. There is a high potential of Dubnyk seeing 30+ shots. If he allows two goals or less, that makes the cost worth it.

Saturday Outlook

The Saturday slate features seven games on what will be the main slate. It will also feature a hot match-up between the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche. This will feature an expected goals of over six. A main slate will include an intriguing match-up between Montreal and Boston. Pittsburgh and Vancouver will be a bit tough to fade but it is possible.

Winnipeg and Toronto have probably one of the best top six match-ups so they may go crazy. Arizona could be enticing in late slates and as a turbo hammer. Their top six could wreak havoc against a Tampa Bay team that can be vulnerable to speed rushes from the wing into the “Royal Road”. Watch out for line shifts and some injuries. The best bet is to get as close to lock as possible before making lineup decisions. With this type of slate, values will be plenty. Be patient and choose wisely. Do not just jump on a hot prospect, just because they look good.
