    I'm not much of a basketball fan, but it sure has been fun watching the Raptors on this run.
    I wish the games were more about exploiting D down low (for higher percentage 2 pointers), rather than throwing up prayers from the 3 point line as often as they do.
    But I imagine that's become necessary because the defences are just so good, is that correct? I don't watch enough basketball to know.
    Sure hope they bring back Leonard somehow. Dominant player.

    Hitting 35% of 3s is better than hitting 50% of 2s.

    100possession:
    35% from 3:
    100x.35=35 hit shots. 35x3=105

    50% from 2:
    100x0.5=50 hit shots. 50x2=100

    That's essentially the idea.

    Players in general have become a lot better at shooting threes

    If you can shoot the three well, then long-ball is statistically the better play than 2's in today's game.

    Raps have been scorching the 3 ball ever since Van Vleet caught fire and Gasol regained his confidence.

    The more important point is that if you can shoot the 3, it will open up the easy 2 as well. If you can't shoot the 3, they will jam the inside.

    I get the idea, but it seems flawed.
    From basketball-reference.com, NBA averages for 2018-19 are 35.5% for 3 pointers and 46.1% for field goals.
    My understanding is that field goals include 2 pointers (excluding free throws) and 3 pointers, so doing the math, in order to get just the 2 pointer percentages works out to 56.7% (not 50%) which still seems remarkably low to me, but whatever. The stats are the stats.

    So using the same 100 possession examples, suddenly the 2 pointers win 113.4 to 106.5.

    Again... they are interrelated. A good 3 point shooting team will have better overall fg % because they can space the floor, creating more open looks and lanes for easy buckets inside.

    This doesn't take into account what happens on those 15 missed shots - defensive rebounds vs. offensive rebounds, normally 10D 5-O - ish? What happens in those changed possessions from missed shots... makes a big difference in that math too.

    this point is key... if Tor can't shoot from beyond the line GS could sit with four floating just outside the paint and clog lanes. That will drop overall FG%

    Yes, for sure, understood. Both shots need to be taken.
    I just think I would lean a little more towards the higher percentage shot, that's all. But I guess you adjust to the players you have. If you're a better than average team at shooting 3s, then definitely go for 3s.

    I've always had the opinion that if you know the name of a ref, it's not a good thing. Tony Brothers shouldn't ref another playoff game again.

    However, reffing wasn't the reasoning for their loss. Holding the GSW to 0points in like 5.5minutes but scoring probably no more than 5 points in that span won't let you win. But if you told Nurse, "You get those exact same looks for the rest of the series but you can't practice for the rest of the series, would you take it?" He very likely would.
