So if we’re suspending for a late hit after getting embarrassed, 2 games for McAvoy then?

I agree McAvoy's late hit was as dangerous and purposely aggressive as the Matheson play. Gaudreau could have quite easily bounced his head off the ice here as well.

I really don't know for this one...
Gaudreau is really small so I think an open-ice hit like that is probably going to hit the head

But in the meantime, the rule must be clear :
Is it a hit to the head : Yes
Is it also a late hit : Humm right to tell, the puck was really close to Gaudreau

I think there's a pretty significant difference between this one and the Pettersson incident, considering in the case of Pettersson the puck was literally on the other side of the zone when it happened and in this case it looked like Gaudreau might have a chance at getting a rebound or digging the puck out.

That being said I do agree that he was in a pretty vulnerable state and I'm glad that he didn't get launched in the boards either which would have been way worse. Nobody wants to see Johnny G out of the game.

I am trying to figure out who is being sarcastic and who isn't with these posts. Here are my best guesses:

    rataylor - sarcastic for sure
    saucelife90 - sarcastic, maybe
    wonko - sarcastic
    ACC90 - not sarcastic
    bondon - not sarcastic

Am I right on any of these guesses?

I have no idea why McAvoy received a penalty for hitting a guy who had the puck between his feet. It's a clean hit in my opinion.

Gaudreau walks McAvoy and goes in for a chance. The puck is almost at the faceoff dot and is actually on a Bruins stick by the time McAvoy elbows Gaudreau in the face because Gaudreau embarrassed him. The mechanism is different from the Pettersson play, the concept is the exact same. Interference and unsportsmanlike conduct on a star player who had just embarrassed the defenceman.

You're not watching the play if you think the puck is in his feet and he still has a chance to play the puck. I didn't think the Pettersson play should be a suspension and ergo this one shouldn't be either. However the Pettersson play was a suspension and therefore this one should be for the exact same reasons. I assume it's not because McAvoy is also a "young star who plays in a marquee market" where as Matheson is not. But it's a joke.

(League has announced McAvoy is not under review)

So no, I'm not being sarcastic. If the Pettersson hit is a suspension, this one is equal to it based on the DoPS explanation video.

I literally don't know what you're watching if you think Gaudreau still has a chance at that puck when McAvoy makes contact. Chara wouldn't have a chance at that puck.

I think as soon as a smaller player gets knocked down, there should be a suspension. The NHL has to protect their talented players in such a violent sport. They can't have smaller players getting injured by the bigger bullies. Because it's 2018. For the record, it's not the players lobbying for suspensions for these hits. Where was the outcry for Theo Fleury or Marty St. Louis or Mark Recchi?

By all means, let's call for suspensions every time a player is injured, even when it was done when a penalty was warranted. That should see a dramatic drop, why, a dive you might say, in the number of players getting injured.

Agreed. The puck was almost at the face off dot and Gaudreau was nowhere near it when the late hit was thrown. You could see that McAvoy was only interested in extracting some sort of retribution or punishment on Mr. Hockey for what ever reason.
