situations become used and abused by both sides to try and score points. I really think it's horrible, but it's worked very well to rile people up on both sides.

I agree with this, but I'd add that this seems to happen a lot on an unconscious level. We see things as we want to see things, filtering the message to support our pre-existing belief system. It's confirmation and selection bias at its worst.

I find this disturbing, not only in how other people consume information to form facts, but more so in how I might be doing it. I'm only in control of myself after all. If I'm not being acutely aware of my bias and how I perceive information, I may be manipulating myself in some way, a slave to my unconscious default settings.

In saying that, I would like to share a video that fundamentally changed my perspective and I hope it can do for others what it did for me.
