This is a great mutual fit. McPhee clearly thinks highly of Theodore, or at least is willing to bet on that. Imagine if Subban hadn't signed that 2 year $2.875M deal, but instead signed 7 years @$5.5M? That would have been 7 years of Subban for ~$39M. As it played out, Subban's contract for those 7 years was $50.75M. That's a huge difference!! This is the bet that McPhee is making on Theodore.

(I'm not saying Theodore is Subban or as good as Subban or anything like that... just highlighting the bet McPhee is making)

It's also good to remember the other side of these gambles. I'm sure Toronto would be happier if they hadn't signed Zaitsev long-term. Not to mention other deals that end up being bought out because player fails to live up to it. It's a gamble, and people should remember that not all gambles pay off. You can like the gamble but it's never a sure thing.

I wouldn't run Zaitsev off just yet, one good year, one bad year - sophomore slump? - we'll see how he bounces back this this year.

I like this deal for Vegas a lot, has the potential to become Josi-esque in terms of value by year 3. I still think NYI should have done something similar with Pulock (but that's just me)

I'm always torn with these deals. On the one hand, the league is turning younger so it makes sense to pay your younger player more. But on the other hand, it's such a gamble on players who've barely established themselves in the league.

I think Theodore will be a fine player and this contract will be good. But this is still a not insignificant risk.

I wonder why 7 and not 8 years? I thought 8 was an option for teams signing guys they already had the rights to. Was that not an option for Vegas here?

They could’ve gone 8. Teams usually have to pay more per season for every added UFA season so it was likely just to keep the cost down.
