Seriously though, did Ekblad mistake Max Domi for Inge Hammarstrom? Aaron wont make that mistake again. And Max that was a bit caveman.

Yeah, I don't think so. I think he would be either apologetic (for basically teaching him that) or proud.
Tie was the undisputed king of cheap shots, and this is coming from a Leafs fan.
He was also, pound for pound, probably the best fighter in the NHL and someone like Ekblad, back then, would know better than to antagonize him.

Agreed. I think some posters are projecting their own opinion about the incident onto Tie. Sure he didn't exactly look happy, but that could be for many different reasons. Maybe he was pissed at the refs for giving Max the misconduct. Maybe he was unhappy because Max had played horribly so far in the game. Maybe he just looked like that because he was thinking of something else.

This is so far from the truth. No one in the NHL is scared of being punched in the face.

Domi has done the exact opposite of buying himself more room. If he's going to react to being played too physically in a preseason game by dropping a glove and punching a guy in the face, Domi is going to be cross checked and slashed even more now. Players want to win and if they can get Domi to take a match penalty and give their team a 5 minute power play, they are going to do it.

This doesn’t make any sense.

Moses what I’m saying is that most of the comments in this thread are by folks that don’t seem to me to get how history/background (within a game, within a league, and for particular players) and the way guys relate to each other on the ice factor into a play like this. I’m not saying what Domi did was right or justified. He deserves the suspension he got. But it’s not that big of a deal and probably makes perfect sense given all the factors I mentioned. I watch it and say to myself “yeah, I could see that.”

This will be my last post on this thread..but jeez guys really? You all make it sound like nobody has ever punched someone in the face without warning or by surprise. Crying out loud he punched him in the face not cut off his arm with his skate. Get a grip.

He wasnt knocked out cold or lost teeth that I could see.
He got his suspension..sure I guess its warranted..but barely..
And no I'm not condoning violence for the slightest action or touting Don Cherry for PM but how about instead of just looking to the ref to help him maybe Ekblad coulda done a bit more to defend himself. It's not like he didnt have advance warning that something was gonna happen
