He had a great career and had a solid past couple seasons but retiring is probably best for his health at the moment.

    Mixed emotions here.

Hate to see him go. I wasn't old enough to follow the full career of Yzerman, Fedorov and Lidstrom, so Zberg and Datsyuk were the first two 2 stars I got to watch and follow the whole way through. What a competitor.

Also hate that I'm sure this has to do with his salary decreasing. But I guess at least we've known he's had back problems for his entire career vs Hossa's mysterious skin ailment.

Finally. Detroit is really going to suck. But so are Montreal and Ottawa!! Ugh. We need top picks ASAP.

He deserved a farewell tour of sorts, but sometimes this is just how things come to an end these days

The call to the Hall is just down the road for Zetts. Always sucks when you cant go out on your own terms.

Interesting. I am not sure he gets into the HOF. He only had a couple of years of elite point production and only the Conn Smythe in 08. Don't get me wrong, he was an incredible shutdown centre and I know that deterred his point totals.

960 points in 1082 is pretty solid in this era though. Compare him to recent retirees....

    H Sedin: 1070 in 1330 GP
    D Sedin: 1041 in 1306 GP
    Vinny: 949 in 1212 GP
St. Louis: 1033 in 1134 GP

    Will be an interesting case.

One of my favorite players of the past 10-15 years.
Wasn't the biggest or the fastest, but he always seemed to process the play one step ahead of everyone else on the ice.
A great competitor and leader. In my opinion, he is definitely HHOF-worthy.
    Points-only keeper league. 12 teams. Keep any 12 players. Dress 12F - 6D - 2G.

One of the last remaining pieces of that Red Wings Babcock/Bowman era. Sad to see him go out like this, but I'm sure it wasn't worth the risk any more.

I don't think he's a HOF worthy player, but I also have zero doubts he will get in, so meh. It stopped being a true HOF long ago.

I'm surprised he is actually announcing his retirement as opposed to doing the LTIR approach. He's set to make $3.35million this year, then $1mil, $1mil. My understanding is that by formally retiring he forgoes all that cash.

Tough way for a great career to end.

I guess he really didn't want to get traded to Arizona.....

He did not announce his retirement. He announced that he will never be healthy enough to play in the NHL again. That is a big difference. He will continue to be paid and will continue to count against the salary cap for the Detroit Red Wings. He will be eligible for LTIR though.
