I seriously wonder why he wasn't traded to Vegas for the assets involved in the Pacioretty deal. Makes me think Ottawa was playing hardball with Vegas, so they decided to grab Pacioretty instead and then Ottawa was left having to deal Karlsson to San Jose to save face. From all reports they were asking too much from Dallas, Vegas, and Tampa. Neither side wanted to back down, so I guess Ottawa would rather do this than give in to those teams. What a joke.

SJS needs to go for it this yr pretty much. If they crap the bed, and decide not to re-sign Karlsson, they can only trade him to a western team, or if they trade him to the east they need to get more than 1 1st round pick to make it viable.
Doesn't seem so bad. There would be all but the Sharks as available suitors lol.

If it matters to anyone, Brady Tkachuk and Josh Norris are best friends.

Well it would be around the deadline when a trade would go down. So really at that point, minus teams without the cap, and minus teams who are out, the 15 teams gets cut down to a lot less.

Just my thinking. My heads still spinning trying to wrap my head around those conditions.

My bet is that teams with cap issues and teams who are out of it still line up to get the Sidney Crosby of defence lol.

Ottawa was stuck and everyone knew it. The return was always going to be underwhelming, but to not get Meier, Labanc, or Merkley included sure seems egregious.

Maybe SJ was Karlsson's preferred destination and Dorion had no negotiating power?

so if he signs back in Ottawa, would Ottawa get a first round pick because they're an eastern team?

Its difficult to believe that this was the best package offered for Karlsson. Dallas and Tampa surely had better movable assets in play.

I'm amazed they couldn't get Tim Heed thrown into the deal going back to Ottawa. He's the #3 offensive defensman at best now on the Sharks, and he's even cheap, which Ottawa loves.

As a Karlsson owner, this has me worried from a fantasy perspective. For as terrible as Ottawa has been, Karlsson was clearly the top player on the team and the offense (both regular strength and moreso the power play) flowed through him. In SJ there’s already a ton of talent (both upfront and at D), I worry that he sees a reduction in TOI and IPP. Real word, it could work well. But for fantasy, hes going from a place where hes the man, to a place where he and one of the other best offensive defensemen (Burns) will need to co-exist and EK may only be used on one power play unit, and/or share more of the ice time / points.
