1st overall pick

Hey all. I have the first overall pick this year in the draft and just trying to figure out which way to go. League and cats in Sig below. With three keepers I kept Monahan, Muzzin and Sergachev. All three in favorable positions in the draft. We?ve recently changed our goaltending categories from save percentage and goals against average to saves and goals against. We?ve normally drafted goalies first for the most part but with the first pick, it?s difficult to pass on the big scorers. What would you do in my format?

McDavid, Ovie, Crosby, Kucherov, Bobrovsky, Holtby?

Who is the best D-man available. I would consider him.

Cost above replacement. You are only starting 130 forwards in your league as opposed to 91 D-men. So I would be considering the cost above a replacement level player of a D-man. The roster setup puts an extra importance on the top end D men.

Last year - 130th forward is Kevin Hayes/Kyle Palmieri/Bo Horvat range of 44 points (of which two of them only played 63 games)

Whereas the 91st Defensman is Matt Benning/Andrew MacDonals range of 21 points.

I am not saying that the best D man available is going to be better than drafting McDavid #1 overall... but I would definitely consider it in every other round of the draft outside of round 1.

If Karlsson is available I would consider him or McDavid at #1.

McDavid is the obvious but it's Roto with hits, sog's and pim's so this all figures in as well. Also, my league typically coveted goalies above all but now the G stats have changed.

I think it is the position they were draft last year. Similar to football keepers.

Monahan drafted in round 14 is a keeper.

But I would still expect the McDavid owner to have kept him in round 1. So not sure!

Those guys were selected in the first 3 rounds and we can't keep anyone selected in rounds 1-3.

True, but with the goalie stats in your league I wouldn't 'pay-up' for a goalie... I would wait long and stream.

Goalies on bad teams are going to get you a lot of saves. Yes, at the cost of GA and Wins... but If you stack all your skaters and not worry about goalies you should be top end competitive in all the skater categories. Then pick a goalie that will get lots of saves and you are competitive in 1/3 goalie categories.

And there is always a goalie that doesn't get drafted that ends up being a top end goalie... keep an eye out for that guy and add him during season.

So far it seems to be McDavid vs Ovie vs Karlsson. Can't argue with any of that but whats goalies does that leave me with 26 picks later? They still hold great value. Do'nt wanna be stuck with bad goalies cause that could be a major problem.

Gotcha, that clears that up. So these guys are looking at now are just for the upcoming season and wont be kept either, correct?

This is what I'm hoping for and agree with. I just can't justify passing on a top scorer for a goalie. Especially with the way goalies have been totally unpredictable last few seasons...
