Do like me, draft both :P!
Seriously, it a rough call.
I would probably take Hughes because he has a clear path to PP1 probably in his first year but Makar offensive skill are sky high.
Hughes by an inch
I flipped a coin and Makar didn't win..

I feel like most everyone has raised some valid points - no way to say who is the actual better prospect just yet, so I'd base it entirely off opportunity.
In Vancouver, the only possibly person who could steal PP1 from Hughes is Juolevi, and that's unlikely. Hughes is the better offensive player.
Makar has Barrie solidified as the PP1 until he's gone. Then he has to compete with Girard and to a lesser extent, Timmins. That means he has for sure 2, maybe 3 guys to compete with.
I'd take Hughes.

I haven't seen him play in college, but I am surprised to hear Makar didn't look good and was just "meh" in college. Can anyone elaborate? 21 points in 34 games, jumping straight from the AJHL to the college ranks sounds pretty good to me. For more context, he finished 5th on the team in points and 2nd in +/-, and it seems as though UMass Amherst is not currently a program with a lot of firepower so he got those results despite his teammates not really being the most high-end talent.
I'm still going to vote Hughes here because he has nothing in his way on that Vancouver roster, but I am surprised to hear some saying Makar's star is falling

To me, both are exactly what you want in fantasy keeper leagues with farm systems. I'm big one both of these guys.
Watching Makar at WJC last year, the guy was just a stand out.
I've seen Hughes only a bit but I can say his skating is sublime.
I don't think you can go wrong with either, but I guess I should vote, so HUGHES, by a hair.
