Do I still need Phaneuf and/or Walman?

Hey folks -

My league just changed from starting 4 Defence to starting 3 D. + 1 Skater.

Team is in my sig. Thinking of cutting Phaneuf and Walman to grab a goalie prospect like Shestyorkin or Hart. I could cut forwards (Suomela, Caggiula) instead.

If I cut both, my D looks like:

Starter 1: Barrie
Starter 2: Krug
Starter 3: Shattenkirk

Bench 1: Matheson
Bench 2: Honka
Bench 3: Brannstrom

Last year Phaneuf was worse than Shattenkirk but better than Matheson, Walman was obviously in the minors.

Do I cut both? Cut just one? Hang onto both?

At first blush, of those names you just tossed out there, I'd like Phaneuf and Carter Hart over the rest of them -- and by a fair margin.

Thanks Moses - That’s my take too. With Matheson, Honka, and Brannstrom I feel like having Walman is excessive, and having Phaneuf let’s me wait on them a year longer.

I'd actually consider Matheson over Phaneuf... just due to the upside. At best you get what Phaneuf gave last year, It's a longer hold on Matheson, but kid is going to explode in the next couple years.

I have no intention of dropping Matheson - in our format he's almost as good as Phaneuf already: I was just considering dumping Phaneuf or Walman to free up space for young a young F prospect and a young G prospect.

now that I am reading this correctly, I'd listen to ALS. and if you can only get one G - Hart, but by all means snag both over these 3.

This is sound advice. Phaneuf gives you one more year of coverage for your bench D, but he might be expendable as well, if you really like the forward prospects.

There is some really great stuff this year - Donato, Kerfoot, DeBrusk, plus everyone drafted this year. It’s a deeper draft year than you might think.

I just got Hudon, Donskoi, and Suomela (in that order) in our Free Agent Draft (Age 24+) last month, and I’m pretty darned happy to get those three.

You think Phaneuf has one more year? I really only need him one more year, but if he’s garbage this year, I’d rather have a prospect in that slot.

Looks like the consensus is to drop Caggiula and Walman, and hang onto Phaneuf for at least one more year.
