My two worst picks (in their eyes) were when I took a couple RBs early in the draft (Royce Freeman and Tevin Coleman). What can you do when you are scrambling to snag a RB before they are all gone. The only one of those two I am worried about is Freeman. Here's hoping he can keep up his strong pre-season play. I dont mind the Coleman pick. I wanted the handcuff and couldnt risk him making it to me 30 some picks later. He wasn't directly in my queue at that time, but he was only 6 or so picks away from my pre-draft rankings when I took him so I didnt think it was that big of a reach. Time will tell.

    Peng's Draft Manifesto:
    Fournecaters

I didn't watch a second of NFL preseason football this year, not one.
I didn't read a single player bio this year, not one.
I was busy (some know) - but I still love this bunch of guys, so wanted to do this draft.

So - I commit to do two things to prep:
    1. I go to www.fantasypros.com and do their speed-mock with computer picks. I do it a first time through with just the "best recommended picks", and I see what grade & number I get. I think it was like 80, B. Then I start tinkering with it, because on watching players get drafted I can see tier drop-offs... scarcity... things like that. And I re-mock, and re-mock... about 10 times.

    2. And, I find one source's ranking list... and I pre-sort that into Yahoo!. That way I have at least ONE alternate rank opinion from the Yahoo! board (which is what most people look at).

From item #1, what I learned is that there was about 12-14 RBs I liked this year.
These top RBs were the guys felt confident in as workhorse #1s. (It showed in the draft, as RBs didn't go much after pick 20 or so)
Last year I wanted to do this same thing and missed on Melvin Gordon (missed my 1st round pick) and it messed up my whole season.
This year, picking #11/14 and then #18... I knew I could get two.
Nice thing about getting two workhorse RBs... you can sort of cross-off that part of the draft and not worry about RBs for 8-9 rounds... which I did.
    So... onto the draft.

1-11. Leonard Fournette (RB1). I know he wants to be a top player in the NFL and team seems ready to let him work. I also knew I could get his cuff (RB2-TJ Yeldon), really late. And I did. RB1, set. Team NAMED!
2-18. Christian McCaffrey (RB2). Have seen him as a "riser", and with his ball catching abilities in our knew 0.5ppr setting, thought he'd be a good pick, wouldn't last even 5 more picks. And I got his cuff, CJ-A late.
3-39. Golden Tate (WR1). Tate is solid, especially with lots of catches. All I wanted was a solid WR here. Landry & Baldwin were also on board, but both my sources had Tate ahead of these two.
4-52. Demaryius Thomas (WR2). I'm a Bronco fan, so this works nicely here. Hogan, Gordon, Watkins were other options... but I don't trust CLE and iffy on other two. Again, both my sources said DT should be gone.
    ...
With 2RB/2WR, I was exactly on pace and had two guys queued up to give me an absolute dynamite QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/TE.
    Then... the snipers showed up.
    ...
5-67. Michael Crabtree (WR3). Ooof, I had eversteady Greg Olsen-TE queued up here... a "gift" at this position... and Loch (PPQB) swiped him directly in front of me. Scrambling for a pick, I settled on Crabtree and don't love it.
6-80. Alshon Jeffrey (WR4). Damn it again. Eversteady Tom Brady-QB was still sitting here... another "gift"... and Axeman33 (TD's N Beer) swipes him directly in front of me. Scrambling I take Alshon, who I don't need early season with my WR-set.
    ...
On the fly, I came up with my strategy to draft my QB & TE... double-up at both coming turn-rounds. This way you get two players to choose from weekly, of similar value. And the high-end QBs and TEs were gone, so this is good planning.
    ...
7-95. Matthew Stafford (QB1a). Stafford is former UGA, and I'm in Georgia with my UGA wife who watches EVERY Georgia game. So it's simply fun to own Stafford. And I grew up near Detroit, so I (unfortunately) like the Lions... a bit.
8-108. Andrew Luck (QB1b). Luck is ranked all over the place for QBs... as high as 6, as low as 20 on some board I had. But he pairs well with Stafford who has nice first 4, Luck has next good 4. I'll take that tandem to start season.

    ...
9-123. Jack Doyle (TE1a). I know nothing of Doyle. But my boards had him as second last remaining TE of Tier IV.
10-136. David Njoku (TE1b). I know nothing of Njoku. But my boards had him as very last remaining TE of Tier IV. So you get how this goes.
    ...
    Rounds 11-15, meh.
Since McCaffrey has an early Week4 bye, I needed a RB3, so I jumped to the Yahoo page and checked projected Wk4... Theo Riddick-DET was there, so I took him in Round 11. A nice ball-catcher for that week.
I knew I wanted to cuff McCaffrey - which I did with CJ Anderson in round 12... and cuff Fournette - which I did with TJ Yeldon in round 15.
I took the PIT-D in round 13. I thought that was a nice pick, I always pick my D for their strength of schedule to open the year, and PIT has some softies to start the season.

My definite talking-point of the night was to draft HUNTER HENRY in round 14!!!
Oh man... did the boys let me have it over that pick!!!

    There's a good story here.

So, on the weekend, my men's beer league team had a game and we beat the 1st place team in our division.
Everybody was in a good mood, had some beers in the parking lot and like 6-7 guys start talking fantasy football.
I say "Do any of you do fantasy hockey?"... {crickets}.
Ah, the south, where guys will play hockey - but don't give a lick about FANTASY HOCKEY.
But they do like fantasy football.
So the one guy from Ontario tells me he might have interest.
So I send him an email on Monday, asking him for some advice in fantasy football (just to get him typing) and then end with an invite to fantasy hockey.
He writes me EIGHT paragraphs on his fantasy football prep... and then says "I just don't think I have any time for fantasy hockey".
    What?! LOL.
You.are.from.Ontario! (Kingston, exactly - went to Queens).

Anyways, in the email he says "You should stash a rookie too, they develop nicely for end of season... and he mentions some TE... H#$#*$# H#*)$) something like that.".
I dedicate "HH" to my memory bank for late draft.

So... it's end of draft... round 14/15... and I remember this.
So I go looking for the guy - and I see "Hunter Henry".
And I think, Oh, that must be him.
    So I draft him.
And the keen guys in the draft explode with pure mockery.
    Oh - I felt shame.
(For those of you that are uber-keen, the guy I was supposed to draft was Hayden Hurst... NOT Hunter Henry. But you can imagine how I got that mixed up. Anyways, I just read that Hurst is out for a few weeks...)

Well... no matter, I don't have a kicker.
And beCAUSE I don't have a kicker (neither does newf), we both got the low-end C- grade from Yahoo!
    Meh.
At least I know who to drop...
    This guy...

Default Re: 2018 DobberHockey Fantasy Football League Tier I: Season 8

I like to be prepared for fantasy football drafts more than any other league as I feel informed late round picks can have the largest effect on team performance of any of the sports. Unfortunately I was vacationing leading up to it, so was only able to start Monday, while also trying to get caught back up on everything at work. And if anyone's a project manager/engineer, they know that all those instructions you left to help keep things moving, you come back to everything being exactly where you left it.... sigh.

    On to the draft!

Picking out of the 4th spot, I felt pretty good about grabbing a premier player. I was hoping to snag one of Gurley, Bell or Johnson and was able to do so in all but one of the mock drafts I was able to fit in (about 6 or so). So naturally, those three were taken, and I was left choosing between Brown and Elliott.

Round 1(4) - Antonio Brown (WR1) - Although I really wanted to take an RB first, I'm just not sold on Dallas this year as an offensively strong team and although Elliott should have an excellent workload, I wasn't convinced of his scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, taking a WR first pushed me lesser known territory as I had less practice drafting a WR first.

Round 2(25) - Adam Thielen (WR2) - Drafting high in a 14 team league means your next pick is a mile away. I knew I had to take one or two RBs with my next picks at 25 and 32 as the workhorses are limited. Freeman was always my target, and I nabbed him regularly in the mocks. McCaffrey, Howard and Mixon were my fallbacks. Freeman went at 17 followed by McCaffrey at 18. I much preferred the WR options remaining at this spot and I knew they would fall off after. I also knew that the next 3 teams all picked an RB first, so I gambled that they would switch gears and I left Mixon and Howard on the board. I debated with Kelce, but ultimately went with Thielen, as I love the Minnesota offense. It might be a mistake given how strong their defense is, but Thielen helped me win Teri II last year, so I went with nostalgia. I would have preferred Diggs, but he went 2 spots ahead of me.
Round 3(32) - Jordan Howard (RB1) - The gamble paid off. Mixon went two picks after my 2nd, so I was sweating as I didn't like my fallback after Howard. I think Howard is great value here as he has the lions share of the workload. I'm not incredibly high on CHI offense, but I wanted a back who would be getting the carries. Now time to wait and drink some more beer.

Round 4(53) - Marquise Goodwin (WR3) - Lamar Miller was my target here but he went early in Round 4. I still wanted to target an RB, but I couldn't pass on Goodwin here as I love his potential in SF as what appears to be their primary target. I had Lynch lined up for my next pick and though I'd be safe as he was a ways down the board.
Round 5(60) - Trey Burton (TE1) - I was wrong. Lynch went 2 picks ahead of me, followed by Dion Lewis. Coleman was next on my list, but he was a ways down the board, and I still had a couple of guys I liked later as well, so I put RB off again. I was scrambling and not sure who to pick. Burton has gotten a lot of hype, but I have no idea whether to believe it or not. Trubisky is a rookie QB which adds even more uncertainty. I don't like uncertainty this high in the draft, but I went against my better judgement and grabbed Burton. I don't love the pick and worried it will bite me. Back to waiting.

Round 6(81) - Kirk Cousins (QB1) - Back to MIN. More nostalgia as I owned him last year. Not sure this is working out in my favour. Taking a QB this early isn't great strategy. I went away from my plan a bit as cousins was a guy I wanted. I should be grabbing an RB here, but the three teams between me and my next pick likely weren't going to take anymore, and I had a decent list of RBs I would be happy with.
Round 7(87) - Chris Carson (RB2) - Pretty happy with this pick, as Carson seems locked in as the feature back in Seattle, although their O-line doesn't look great. Penny has a number of questions marks and an injury he's recovering from, so I was comfortable making this selection. Hyde was next on my list, but I liked SEA as a team better. Hyde went right after this pick.

Round 8(109) - Adam Jones (RB3) - I had a decent queue of players I liked here. I was hoping to get Cohen to handcuff Howard, C. Kupp (thanks for the bra joke) and Agholor. All far enough down the board I thought I'd get one. Apparently not. Adam Jones was the backup plan. He's suspended for 2 games to start the season, but my research indicates he is the most talented of the backs in GB. I'm gambling as he starts off behind the 8-ball, but as a bench player, upside is what you're looking for.
Round 9(116) - Mike Williams (WR4) - I really wanted Stills here as I think he'll be great in this setup. He was sniped 2 picks ahead of me. Mike Williams was next on my list, who I like, but comes with more question marks in terms of targets. Keenan Allen never seems to stay healthy, so there's a road to production there, but Williams needs to stay healthy too...

Round 10(137) - Keelan Cole (WR5) - Don't know loads about him, but someone will get targets in JAX with Lee down. Hopefully it's Cole.
Round 11(144) - Giovani Bernard (RB4) - Should provide additional production with half PPR and there weren't many options left. I considered the handcuff with Penny, but really didn't like what I read about him. Penny went with the next pick.

Round 12(165) - Spencer Ware (RB5) - Just a lottery ticket if Hunt goes down.
Round 13(172) - Atlanta (DEF) - who knows
Round 14(193) - Robbie Gould (K) - always liked him, with SF which is a decent offense
Round 15(200) - Mitchell Trubisky (QB2) - Was going to grab Cameron Meredith here, but he went 3 picks ahead. I figured I had some investment in CHI so why not double down with the last pick to see how this kid does. Not expecting a lot, but we'll see.

Was a great draft. Knowledgeable GMs. Much more challenging than the mock draft would have you believe. I loved my draft last year. I feel moderate about it this year. Had to make a lot of tough decisions. You could tell a lot of the GMs felt the same way as a number of picks took quite a while and there were moments of quiet as everyone seemed to be searching for a plan forward.

Some reaches (although I'm stretching here, as overall, the draft was very tough and well conducted by all):
Round 2(21) - Aaron Rodgers (QB) - He's the best QB out there for sure, but it's just not worth taking a QB at expense of the other positional talent still available. I'm one to talk as I feel I took Cousins too early in Round 6, but I can't fathom taking a QB in the first couple of rounds.
Round 5(62) - Jacksonville (DEF) - Defense is so matchup oriented it's just not worth investing high picks in it. Most teams I know tend to stream them week to week without much trouble. It does make it a plug and play situation though, but given the rest of your positions aren't filled yet, I think this is far too early.
Round 5(64) - Jamaal Williams (RB) - Based on my research of the GB RB situation, I thought this was too early. That being said, RBs were flying off the board far earlier than expected and it could very well be that I am not reading the GB situation correctly, so it could be a great pick. A number of people were upset he was off the board.

    Steals:
Round 9(114) - Kenny Stills (WR) - I really like him here as a potential top option for MIA. I was 2 picks away from making it myself.
Round 10(138) - Jared Cook (TE) - Taking your first TE in round 10 and managing a decent option in Cook is a great play and well executed.

Josh Meet Kittle is the best looking team coming out of the draft in my opinion.

I'll give the writeup the ole college try.

My prep for the draft was basically looking at fantasypros, ESPN and CBS sports for rankings. When I found fantasypros had rankings for 0.5PPR, I pretty much went with them for most of my rankings. Picking 12th overall I knew most of the best RBs would already be snagged out of the gate but I didnt think so many would go so early. When I did a couple Yahoo mock drafts, it didn't seem like most of them were taking RBs as often in a 0.5PPR and WRs seemed to have a bit better value and were drafted before a lot of RBs in those mocks. Anyway, here's how my draft rolled out. I still dont understand how Yahoo graded me an A for the draft but whatever.

1.12 - Odell Beckham Jr. - I had OBJ as my 8th overall ranked guy going into the draft so when he was still there at 12, I was happy. I would have rather taken a RB here but guys like Hunt and Fournette went earlier then I anticipated so OBJ "slipped" to me here. I'll take it.

2.17 - Devonta Freeman - I wasn't going to take B2B WRs with my 1st two picks, even though I had WRs ahead of Freeman in my rankings here. AJ Green was the top guy on my draft rankings at this point but I needed a solid starting RB. I was hoping Dalvin Cook would be my guy here (he was in my mocks) but he went two picks earlier. I had to choose between Freeman and McCaffrey and with Carolina bringing CJ Anderson in, I was leary of McCaffrey`s role so I went with Freeman, hoping I could bring in Telvin Coleman as a handcuff later on. I had both of these guys last year if I remember correctly and it worked well for me so I was comfortable doing it again. I jumped a few spots here to take Freeman but happy with the pick.

3.40 - Zach Ertz - My intention here was to go with another RB, but with my three queued up gone bang, bang, bang before my pick (McKinnon, McCoy, Collins) I went with my next highest ranked player and that was Ertz. I was not a happy camper seeing all three of those RBs gone leading up to my pick and to say I was shaking my fist at my computer screen is an understatement. I hope all three RBs get hurt and miss the season.

4.45 - Royce Freeman - Once again, I got sniped when Lamar Miller went right before me here as he was in my queue so I had to go with my next highest ranked RB and that was rookie Royce Freeman. This is probably the one pick I am the most skeptical about because I dont like taking a rookie this high but all the sites I looked at had him ranked right in this area so I went with their knowledge over my limited knowledge. They seem to like him so here's hoping this one pays off.

5.68 - Tevin Coleman - Maybe a reach here but not much of one when I looked at my rankings. I had guys like Mark Ingram and Rex Burkhead ahead of Coleman in my rankings but the need of the handcuff was too strong for me to pass on him and I wasn't going to take a chance on him not being there for my next pick so I grabbed him while I could.

6.73 - Tom Brady - I wasn't quite ready to take a QB this early but with Big Ben going just before my pick here, and a few coming up in my rankings I figured it was time. I struggled between Brady and Drew Brees here but decided I'd take the more reliable Brady. I dont hate the pick here but not sure if this was the right QB at the right time. That being said, Brees, Cousins and Wentz all went in the same round after I picked Brady so probably not a bad pick all things considered.

7.96 - Pierre Garcon - I still needed another starting WR and Garcon was the best on ranked on my board. I am hoping Jimmy G can carry on what he started late last season.

8.101 - Nelson Agholor - With all my starting positions filled for the most part, I started looking for quality bench guys to fill spots and Agholor was the top ranked guy on my list. He should be a solid fill in on bye weeks or an injury replacement guy.

9.124 - Randall Cobb - At this point, I am just looking for BPA to fill spots and Cobb seemed to be that guy at this point. I am not sure how much I like this pick here as I dont really trust Cobb much in GB anymore but I can only hope he finds his old self again. Again, bye week guy for the time being.

10.129 - Ronald Jones Jr - With my bench filling up with WRs, I wanted to find a bench RB to help with bye weeks and injury issues. I really had a hard time and ran the clock right to the end to make this pick. I couldnt really find anyone I liked here but Jones was my BPA by my rankings. Jones hasn't had a great preseason and looks to be a backup at this point when most thought he would be the starter coming into the preseason. One can only hope he finds his rhythm. P7 said he was going to take him if I hadn't so I hope we are both right.

11.152 - Houston D - Well, the picking was getting tougher and tougher for me at this point. I hadn't ranked anyone this deep so I was scrambling most picks. I need a D at some point and a couple had already gone earlier in the round so I figured it was time. The three sources I was using had Houston in their top 10 for team D so it seemed they were the best option for me.

12.157 - Calvin Ridley - At this point, I was ready to start reaching for options. These are the picks I can use for WW options down the road if needed. Ridley seems to be fitting in nicely in Atlanta so it was worth a shot.

13.180 - Matt Breida - There is only one RB on the roster that was there last year to learn Shanahans playbook, and that was Matt Breida. Not only did he know it, he was excelling with it later in the season. He's the backup to McKinnon right now, but if he struggles with the plays, I can see Breida getting more touches then expected. He was a guy I had penciled in as a sleeper, late round pick, hoping no one else would even consider him. Looks like I was right. Now I just hope he proves me right. Could be a real steal here.

14.185 - Matt Bryant - Well, I normally leave my kicker until the last round but said screw it and took one because I was struggling to find anyone else I liked.

15.208 - Blake Bortles - I really saw nothing I liked so I figured I'd grab a backup for Brady and his bye week. Bortles was the best QB left that I could see so here we are.

lol....I got a "C" as expected. Think I had a C+ last year w/7 max wins projected and wound up in the playoffs. F**k YaBlew!

However, if I'm honest. I was kinda meh with my outcome. Being deep on the turn like that you have to reach for players from time to time its unavoidable with 20+ picks going off the board before your next turn. My starters are solid enough. But I will need to work the WW to upgrade my bench some. Hated having to waste two roster spots with a onesie position like TE but with Gronk....he's bound to miss a game or two.

I REALLY wanted Fornette at the 12 spot and allowed myself to get distracted when he was selected by P7. Then I thought I go get Gronk for the immense upside. I think I'd like that pick back and would have grabbed CMC instead. But my thinking at the time was that being on turn, I need to draft as much ceiling early as i could no matter the position. Hence Gronk and the Roethlisberger pick. Then I missed out on Mixon and Jam Will. Lamar Miller is a steal in the 4th. Not a huge fan of his talent but volume alone should get me the points I need.

Fuggit. Should be a fun season as always. Good luck gents!

Fun draft with some knowledgeable guys. Great prep for my money draft on Labour Day Monday.

Round 1 (1) – Todd Gurley LAR (RB1) – Nearly unanimous #1 from my resources. Didn’t overthink it

Round 2 (28) – Travis Kelce KC (TE1) – Was not thinking taking a TE with my 2/3 pick, but I had Kelce ahead of Gronk and obviously, he wouldn’t be there the next time around
Round 3 (29) – Amari Cooper OAK (WR1) – New coach with a more offensive outlook. Read that Cooper will be key to the offense. Debated taking RB-Jerick McKinnon

Round 4 (56) – Brandin Cooks LAR (WR2) – Was hoping WR-Marvin Jones would slide to me, but Zorro sniped him 2 picks before mine.
Round 5 (57) – Corey Davis TEN (WR3) – Struggled with this pick. Davis hasn’t exactly lit it up in the pre-season, but my resources touted him as potential breakout player. In hindsight, should have taken RB-Lynch OAK with one of these two picks

Round 6 (84) – Devin Funchess CAR (WR4) – Got the guy I wanted leading up to this pick
Round 7 (85) – Chris Thompson WSH (RB2) – Debated between Thompson, Hyde and Barber. Settled on Thompson even though there were some injury/recovery questions. Coach says he’s ready. Good enough for me

Round 8 (112) – Marlon Mack IND (RB3) – Was going to take QB-Rivers, but once again Zorro left his mark 2 picks before mine. Decided that there were enough QB’s in the next tier to defer selecting. Needed another RB starter in case Thompson is slow coming back from his injury. Yes, I realized that Mack is likely to miss week 1 due to injury – the ironing is delicious
Round 9 (113) – Chris Godwin TB (WR5) – Already had 4 WR, decided to take a chance on a guy some are saying “looks like a star”. We’ll see if the hype continues when the season starts

Round 10 (140) – Derek Carr OAK (QB1) – Was hoping QB-Alex Smith would fall, but Tears of Joique snagged him ahead of me, leaving Carr and Dak Prescott. Hoping for a little more offense from the new regime in Oakland
Round 11 (141) – LA Chargers LAC (DEF) – I had the Chargers as my fifth-ranked Defense and last team in my top tier. If I chose to wait, I would have wanted HOU as they are supposed to have an easier schedule

Round 12 (168) – Jordan Wilkins IND (RB4) – Was hoping to snag a top K in Zuerlein or Tucker, but both were taken in this round, so I went with the handcuff to Mack
Round 13 (169) – Jameis Winston TB (QB2) – Having Carr as QB1 is not comforting, so I wanted a talented QB2, even with his 3 game suspension. Winston needs to be ready for week 7 to cover Oakland’s bye week. Hindsight tells me I should have taken WR-John Brown BAL, who was taken with the pick immediately following mine (kudos to rataylor22)

Round 14 (196) – Matt Prater DET (K) – Was hoping Lutz, Elliott or Butker would fall to me, but had to settle for Prater. Dome kickers rule anyway
Round 15 (197) – Cameron Meredith NO (WR6) – Almost took DaVante Parker, but was scared off with his finger issue. Went with the wideout with the better QB

Tough draft. Not many steals or bad picks. This draft was quite a departure from my previous drafts where I almost always end up with 2 RB in the first 3 picks. Kelce threw that off. We’ll see if it was a strategic error. I got a C+ from Yahoo, but as the others have mentioned, no one cares what Yahoo has to say.

Is it too late to forfeit the season? I have already lost MacKinnon, Chris Warren III and now semmingly Rodgers.

I own Kareen Hunt in both of my football pools, so I am expecting him to suffer a long-term injury next week.
