Why are people so hyped with FIFA 2018?

I think meeting in the middle and saying:
There aren't too many flops due to the surprising physicality - fair.
Do soccer players act out their injuries more than other sports in order to get the call - also fair.

Before this World Cup I was closer to the camp of the ones being annoyed at soccer and people grimacing and rolling around to get the call, so I didn't watch any. Joined an office pool and actually watched quite a few games this year, and with something to cheer for, actually got into it and quite enjoyed it. There's points to be said for both, but in the end, to each their own

Acting afterwards I will 100% agree with. Even if there's 1 Neymar play out of 100 real plays (or liveable plays), it turns people off so quickly.

This feels like the most #PleaseLikeMySport thread of all time. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and has passed hockey as the 4th most popular sport in the US.

I'll put it this way, the game would be much more enjoyable to watch without the constant flops (I witnessed 2 alone in less than a minute in the Portugal vs Spain game).

Hockey also has annoying things about it that for me really take away from the game. Other sports do as well. The beauty of football (i.e. soccer) far outweighs the negatives for me (and for many, many people).

Oh, allow me to join in the #flufffest by quoting your post and simply agreeing with you that Scott Sterling is most definitely a legend. He had no business making some of those saves. Totally sacrifices his body for the save.

Also, I do wish Canada was better at this floppy sport that dominates/fascinates the entire world outside of North America. If our best athletes would play soccer seriously, then Canada would qualify for the World Cup more often than once every 30 years or so.

Hockey has the World Juniors decided by a shootout don't they...It's a euro thing the shootout/penalty kick, not a soccer thing.

Nobody likes a game decided on penalties. Now, in soccer, before the use of penalties came about, they used to have the tied match replayed a couple of days later and if the second game ended in a tie, they flipped a coin. I kid you not.

Is it just me or people are so hyped because of the world cup? What?s so special about it anyway? I mean I understand it?s a 4-year thing and that it?s a global event but if you think about it, it?s still just football. I met these Colombian women on the local pub. They asked me why I wasn?t cheering for Russia (they were playing that time) like the rest. I answered honestly that I?m not really into the game and they looked at me like I grew two heads. Seriously, why so giddy about it? Please can somebody explain this to me. Also, I don?t even know why they are asking me about supporting ?Russia? ? I am white, but I don?t think I look Russian at all. (?)

That seemed the strange part to me. Not that the question was asked on a hockey site. But that an account was seemingly created to ask the question on a hockey site. When there hasn’t really been much World Cup talk here anyway. Is there a dobbersoccer I don’t know about?

Huh, that's one theory, but I would think that Dutch would be too distraught with his country losing to actually post, let alone create a new account!
