If Marleau goes to Robidas Island for the final year of his deal...

Pretty much been the story of Bowman's life since Toews and Kane's big deals kicked in.

I?d like to know the source of this reporting. I don?t think he?d be talking to teams that simply can?t afford him. That makes no sense.

I disagree. Take a team like TB. If Tavares has an interest in playing there, I'm sure Stevie Y would meet with him. TB would have to move out assets to sign JT; but it's not like they are overloaded with a pile of terrible contracts that they can't move. Granted, anything but JT re-signing in NY seems like a long-shot to me...

As mentioned in here from last night, Tavares' list of visitors on Monday/Tuesday will almost certainly include TOR, SJ and DAL. TBL may be in there too. LAK, after signing Kovalchuk, likely out. Perhaps VGK gets in there.

This is correct. It's simple, if a premier free agent is interested in your team, you meet with him, even if you're likely not to have cap space. YOu have the opportunity to gauge interest, and lay groundwork not only for the player and his agent both now, and at some point in the future, but possibly any other future players that agent represents.

Thank you! Sounds like educated guessing to me. I still don’t see how Tampa or Toronto can fit him under without getting stupid.

Toronto has a ton of cap space this year. I've read some speculation that they could offer him a one-year max contract (20 percent of cap) and then an 8-year deal next year. Of course, the contracts could not be tied together (cap circumvention), so there would have to be a leap of faith from JT's side.

If JT signs with Toronto on a 1yr max, that's quite the interesting thing going forward.

Is there a rule where JT can't sign a 1yr deal with Toronto on July 1st, then a 7yr deal on July 2nd to have an 8yr deal?

    Actually this is the rules:
If Toronto signs him July 1st 2018, it's January 1st 2019 the Leafs can sign him to an extension.

the 15.9m/1yr offer Tor is rumoured to make Tavares is a really interesting one. IDK if it's enough. He's been on the record several times about liking the anonymity NYI affords him walking around the city. That's destroyed in Tor. Staple is as reliable as it gets for NYI news, so those teams would be accurate. it does set up a mini-stand off between Lou and Dubas, mentor v. mentee very early after Lou's departure.

Wouldn't he be able to sign an 8 year extension? so in a way it could be a 9 year deal??

If this isn't in the Ilya Kovalchuk circumvention prevention handbook, then it should be!

So I don't know the exact rule, but when a FA signs with a new team on a 1yr deal, he can't sign an extension until January 1st. So there's talk about the Leafs offering the 1yr max (15.6mill i think), then Jan 1st sign a 7 or 8 yr extension with JT to effectively have JT on a 8 or 9 yr deal.
