    Washington Capitals@Capitals

TRADE | The Washington Capitals have acquired a second round pick, 47th-overall from the Colorado Avalanche in the 2018 NHL Draft in exchange for defenseman Brooks Orpik and Philipp Grubauer. #ALLCAPS

I thought Grubauer would have commanded that alone. Clears space for Carlson though.

Makes sense considering they couldn't get teams to bite on a 1st

Nice for the Av's to add a couple of Stanley Cup champs.

Solid pickup for the Av's. Orpik is a beast back there and Grubs adds a better option in nets then Hammond.

Friedman just said Colorado will either trade Orpik or buy him out.

I thought McLellan said he was going to try and find Grubauer a #1 gig!?!? Was the 47th overall the BEST offer they received? I thought there were like 5 or 6 teams interested in him. This just doesn't make sense...

It makes sense if they took a lower pick to clear cap space.

Will Grubauer be the starter or Varlamov?

Exactly. They cleared 5.5 M or 3 M over 2 seasons if they were to have bought Orpik out.

It's still Varlamov's net but with his injury history, I could see Grubauer staring more games than your usual back-up.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

Pretty sure finding the cap space for Carlson by moving Orpik is more important to them than finding a cushy spot for a backup goalie they won?t be able to afford.

Nice for Grubauer, upgrades Colorado in goal immediately. I'd expect him to get something like a 45-30 split of starts with Varlamov, and some thrown in for the guy they call up when somebody (likely Varlamov) is hurt.

Orpik is not good at this point, and Washington clearly took less back in picks due to the cap that Colorado is potentially eating.

Interesting definition of hockey trade when a salary dump was a major part of the trade.
