Going into 2017-2018: Cleveland was the East faves to open last season. Their 5/2 was way higher likelihood (30%-50%) than the next highest, Boston at 15:1 (6%-8% likelihood).

Going into 2018 MLB year: The Braves were 200-1 odds for World Series and 20-1 for division. That placed them a clear 4th best predicted in their five team division.

People can hang their hat on an outlandish prediction... but none (/very few) of us are smarter than the Vegas bookees when it comes to sports predictions.

Even Vegas never identified those teams as a serious threat... this being the point: everybody knows what teams have a real shot, and its always those teams that end up in the finals.
I didn't mean the Raptors of 2017-18, I meant there's always teams in the NBA that have a good turn around randomly after a bad previous year. This yr it was the 76ers, the year before was the Bucks, back when the Raps had that 1st playoff game in years it was them, 5/6 yrs ago it was the GSW.

The same reason why super teams exist, a team can jump from bad to good in 1 yr. Stars are the difference. 1 player having a career yr can catapult you from being a lottery pick team to playoffs with home court. You said you can't remember a year where an NBA team emerged to be great. Great maybe not, but going from terrible to good happens every year.

Sounds like Lebron is trying to play executive in Los Angeles as well now.

I saw this, he's prolly wanting to play off the ball more to save energy really, and with all the 1yr deals it could be a test to see if it works as he's never really had this type of system.

Interesting test, it's pretty much a "build and see who fits with Lebron" season anyways, so why not test out a different system then he's used too.

They'll still add shooters. If he wants to play in the post he can become lethal with his passing abilities and real shooters out there.

I'm hoping for a typical NBA trade where 7 teams are involved and 38 players change spots just to make the salaries match.

I don't watch a lot of basketball, but from what I know, anything more then DeRozan and a small + is going to be an overpayment unless he agrees to an extension as part of the trade. DeRozan is locked up long-term at least.

100%. Kawhi is an MVP caliber person, if he's healthy. But you don't give up Derozan + (prolly OG or Siakem, plus picks) for 1yr. 2019-20 is gonna suck, no player will trust Toronto either. Sounds like at a Summer league game last week the Raptors told Derozan he wasn't being traded. Now he is, after signing with a team to play with his friend....

As cool as it is to get Kawhi, I think this is a bad move.

Deal is done. Derozan for Kawhi with lots of other players

    However, here’s some 2019 FA:
    Horford (player option)
    Irivng (player option)
    Love
    DeAndre Jordan
    Millsap (Team)
    Durant (player)
    Thompson
    Cousins
    Marc Gasol (player)
    Whiteside (player)
    Bledsoe
    Middleton (player)
    Butler (player)
    Prozingis (Restricted)
    Melo Anthony (stay awaaaayyyy)
    JV (Player option)
    Miles (Player)

Toronto doesn't sign Kawhi, they do have cap to go elsewhere.
