Default Keep Dubnyk or take a chance with Raanta?

I am wandering about a hard choice I can?t figure out. Would it be to much of a risk to trade Devan Dubnyk for a draft choice, let say a 2nd or 3rd round pick, considering that almost everybody from last year will keep their goalie. One of the guys offered me a 3rd round pick for him, it?s at the regular draft after each participant has revealed their 10 keepers. Basically my issue is that I really want to take a chance with Raanta next year, the chances I?ve taken this year reallly paid off since I won the pool after finishing at the last spot last year. But passing from Dubnyk to Raanta... Is that to much of a gamble? Thanks for the answer!

It's a gamble, not a huge one, but not one you need to take. But if you want to take it and it goes wrong I don't think you're throwing away a season or anything. It might very go right, looking at how the Coyotes improved in the 2nd half. How are you getting Raanta though? Draft or trade? It could really be costly if you're planning on using a high pick or making a deal for him, as I imagine his owner would be high on him as well. I can see the temptation to take the gamble - Raanta a new starter on an up and coming team vs Dubyk on the boring old Wild.

It would be via the draft, and considering that no one is interested in him, I could wait further in the draft to take him and bank on very good players that will be available. I must take in consideration that we have 2 expansion teams that will look to draft goalies in the first rounds of the draft. Maybe the first 5 rounds. Other than that, all the other GM will look elsewhere for goalies since Rinne, Fleury, Price, Schneider, Smith are still available. Im hesitating here because Dubnyk would give me a keeper space that would allow me to keep Taylor Hall for the next season, heres my real concern about all this...

If the options are Dubnyk or a 3rd round pick plus getting to keep another good skater, I'm taking the pick & good skater every time, when I'm dealing with a backup goalie.

I'm not sure Raanta would be the guy I'd want in a league where team quality matter more than goalie quality, but it's a reasonable gamble to take. I'd be reasonably confident that Hall is a goo dchoice, as long as you have the cheapies ( Ithink all are still cheap) Laine, Marner, Sergachev being kept.

A great thing about Dubnyk is he's a true #1, meaning he the team has hitched its wagon to him and hasn't bothered with even a halfway decent back-up and probably won't again this season. That means he'll get you 65+ games and for a pretty good team who stands to do even better under a new GM and - probably - new coach. I happen to like Raanta a lot, but who's to say he can replicate what he did and there's also no telling if he'll get as many starts nor whether there could be a back-up who could eat into starts. Dubnyk is the safer bet, on paper.

And if I could get Price for him, would it be a downgrade?

Okay, then keeping Dubnyk makes a lot more sense.
