Default Is Rantanen really a sell high?

    Hey guys!

I recently read on the Ramblings that Rantanen's stats screamed regression... let's just say that MacKinnon's great season will also be hard to repeat..

Question is: is it worth to trade him (keeper cap league) for a 4th overall pick that includes any players that were unsigned (so Pettersson and Tolvanen also count).. So taking for granted that Dahlin is 1st overall it could turn out to be any of Svech, Zadina, Borgstrom, Pettersson or Tolvanen...

Would you consider this if you were a contender?

lets say he drops down to 65 points. Any player you draft with that 4th pick will take 2-3 maybe more years to get to that point unless you get very lucky. Keep what you got.

I'd keep Rantanen over trading him for the unknown in the draft pic. If you are lucky, the 4th overall becomes as good as Rantanen is just turning in to.

I only trade Rantanen for a surer thing than Rantanen.

This, or an equally sure thing at another position, or a guy with a bit more upside that's about as proven. For a rookie pick, no way.

Keep him. Even with regression he's miles ahead of what you'll get next year from the players mentioned or this year's draft class.
    Set roster weekly in H2H (Mon to Sun) - 16 Teams - start 6F, 3D, and 1G per week - Keep 2

    Points: 2 G / 2 A / 1 PPG / 1 PPA / 1 Hat Trick / 1 SHG / 1 SHA / 1 GWG - 3 Goalie Win / 2 Goalie Loss in SO or OT / 5 goalie SO

    Forwards:
    C. McDavid, N. Kucherov, R. O'Reilly, J. Schwartz, J. Toews, J. Huberdeau, T. Toffoli, M. Granlund

    Defense:
    B. Burns, J. Klingberg, R. Josi, J. Slavin

    Goalie:
    J. Binnington

    This isn't a sell-high trade.

I wouldn't consider it if I was in a rebuild, and definitely not if I was a contender. Even with a regression, he's got all the ingredients you want in a young keeper player, except unlike those high flying prospects he's actually gone out and proven something. It just seems like a dice roll you don't need to take.

I don't see MacKinnon and Rantanen suddenly becoming 70 and 60 point players.
They have insane chemistry with Landeskog and they are fixtures on the PP with Barrie & Co.
They might not be 95-85 point guys every year, but they won't completely fall off a cliff either.
I expect an average of 78-85 for MacKinnon and 68-74 for Rantanen most years. With the occasional big years mixed in like 18-19.
Rantanen is still a baby too. I wouldn't be trading him for a draft pick.
"Selling high" on Rantanen would be cashing him in for Matthews, Laine or Kucherov - not a 4th overall draft pick lol.

Selling high is always relative to what you can extract. In this case, it's clearly not enough. Get into multiple picks where you could draft a few of the names mentioned and we could be in range.

I do consider Rantanen a regression candidate. Or rather, that it would be really difficult for him to do much better than he did this season. 35 PPP is a massive haul, and PP performances fluctuate from year to year. He could lose 15 points from the power play and I wouldn't bat an eye, but that would also still leave him in around the 70-point level, which is awesome and better than what you're likely to get from any one prospect.

If you keep entertaining these bad offers you'll talk yourself into making a bad trade. Again, this is not sell-high. A sell-high deal would be moving him for a guy like Laine.

To me that's just another mediocre offer.

Unless you get something you simply can't refuse, an offer that blows you away, keep Rantanen.

Keep Rantanen. He's going to be paired with a top 5 player in the league for the foreseeable future. Not sure Rantanen duplicates his numbers from this season but I'd bet he gets fairly close.
