My Twitter feed exploded with this news. I'm surprised it has taken this long - I've never experienced a life without being able to gamble on sports.
Most people don't get addicted to gambling - you just need a proper support system for those who do.

Do any states have government run gambling 'games', ala Proline in the provinces?
Yes. Delaware runs a NFL parlay card through its casinos & some retailers. Many, many people don't realize that Vegas isn't the only legal gambling place for sports betting in the US.
There is also daily fantasy sports, which are essentially gambling, but a very shady version of it where the DFS providers have employees who analyze betting trends, and then bet themselves in the same pools.
Here's info on the law that was struck down, note that part about betting on gerbil & hamster racing in Montana:

This a good example of removing federal overreach, in my mind. Most importantly, it helps put a dent in organized crime.

This is wonderful news--no more .eu sites to place a wager. Hopefully this paves the way for online Poker too?

This will definitely put a huge dent in organized crime, but it will give the biggest bookie (the govenment) a huge boost.
Yes, the part about betting on pigs, hamsters and gerbils is hillarious. It's for cities of less than 100 or outside city limits. So if you want to bet on farm animals or pets, you have to go outside the city limits.
Of course the sad part of all this is that gambling has just become more convenient and will probably destroy more lives.
