    Default Svechnikov vs. Petterson

    Hey all,

Real quick question to prep for upcoming draft (I pick 6th)

My team is low on pure goal scorers so I'm leaning toward Svech to also capitalize on his peripherals, but Petterson with Boeser could be an instant point producer. If only 1 is available, then my pick is easy, but if both are available, who ya got?

    Other players available are

    Dahlin (will go first)
    Tolvanen
    Connor
    Mittelstadt
    Marchesseault
    W. Karlsson
    Gourde
    Rantanen

    Hey Fan,

Well, let's see where Svechnikov goes. However, if you're looking for goals, I would be looking at W.Karlsson and Connor without question. And, ummm, Mikko Rantanen?! He just scored 84 points (with 29 goals) as a 21 year old! He is also attached-at-the-hip to MacKinnon, and part of arguably the best line in hockey. Unless I'm missing something - why on earth wouldn't he go 1st, let alone 2nd?

I woul$ easily go with Rantanen first. No question. March and Connor probably 2nd and 3rd. Then Svechnikov and Dahlin. Then the rest in some order. There might be an argument to take Dahlin or Svechnikov ahead of March and Connor if you don’t th8nk March will repeat and Connor will become at least a 70 point player. In my dynasty I guess I would take Svechnikov ahead of both and a Dahlin if I needed a D. But that’s my personal opinion, not likely unanimous.

I’d rate. Connor and and Tolvanen similarly. Gourd would be way down the list for me. But Rantanen has to be number 1.

    Thanks guys
I agree with you guys but some guys in my league are either rebuilding and looking for the homerun pick (Dahlin) or are not as committed and will just pick the next highest fanpoint guy without researching (Marchesseault)

I can see our first round going something like
    Dahlin
    Petterson
    Marchesseault
    Rantanen
    Connor
    Svechnikov
    Tolvanen
    etc
    etc
    etc

Just the way it is I guess. I suppose anything can, and likely will happen.

    Thanks again. Rep to both!

I will face the same decision you anticipate having (Svech vs Pettersson).

Svechnikov generally seems held in higher regard than Pettersson on various threads around here. It does seem like Svech might bring more to the table in multi-cat leagues, but I am a bit surprised that Pettersson isn't generating more hype - especially compared to Tolvanen - with the way he closed out his SHL season. I know part of the Tolvanen hype was his imminent NHL arrival, but still...

I am going to be debating this all summer. Very interested to see where Svechnikov lands at the draft.

Yah these rankings are nuts were not talking old guys here. I am going Rants followed by Marchesseault then Connor. From there is a roll of the dice, Petterson should get a little more respect though but maybe that's because I am a Nucks fan or maybe it's because on top of dominating the SHL regular season he just dominated the playoffs as well.

    LOL

Part of the issue is that we only allow 1 drop and 1 FA pickup per year and guys tend to burn it early in the season so all moves were done before Rantanen broke out this year. Its just hard to add all the talent at once with only 1 add all season.

Either way, there always seems to be a high focus on the new young guy and I know the first OA pick really wants Dahlin. I'm on board with all the feedback given here and would take Rantanen in a heartbeat but at #6 I think I should be looking in the Svech Pettersson direction as questioned.

PS. No there are no openings in the league. We've been a close group of buddies doing this for over 20 years.

    Thanks again folks

Pettersson is the best forward prospect right now, including undrafted prospects. Very close with Svechnikov but I like what Pettersson has done his D+1 year so much that I rank him above the Russian. So that's answering the title question but yeah, why is Rantanen available?
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

Others have already commented on the Rantanen thing so I'm going to ignore that and just answer the question: I prefer Svechnikov over Pettersson but the difference between them is minimal and I wouldn't blame anyone for choosing Pettersson.
