    Default Heiskanen

Wondering where you would rank Miro Heiskanen compared to the upcoming draft of dmen. Obviously excluding Dahlin. Looking for offensive upside mainly.

    Thanks.

Instead of starting a new topic, hope you don't mind the hijack since it's been 10 days.

Would you go for Heiskanen or Girard? I searched to no avail. Dobber has them in the same tier, but more opinions never hurt.

Heiskanen for me as well, though I do like me some Girard.

Heiskanen. His offensive upside is prime Duncan Keith.

I think he meant more 55pt potential. keith has had 3 double digit goal seasons as well... I just think you're getting a better all around Dman in heiskanen, more likely to fill all cats than Girard.

I second the motion. If you will, Sam Girard is in the Sandis Ozolinsh/Bryan Berard mould... While Heiskanen might be more Sergei Zubov/Duncan Keith.

    Offensive upside only, (non-Dahlin):

    1. Hughes / Bovist / Girard (think Gostisbehere / Klingberg type production)
    2. *Merkley (risky!!)
    3. Heiskanen / Dobson (think Pietrangelo type production)
    4. Bouchard (Think Ekblad type production - good G numbers but modest overall. Best case, Carlson)
    5. Smith (Think Brodie numbers)

*Risk factor drops him down to 5th place with Smith.

Offensive upside I have slightly different:

    1) Merkley (massive risk as noted by Fung, but the new style of NHL I think will give him a better shot than Ellis/R.Murphy/A.DeAngelo - and he has insane O-ability)
    2) Heiskanen & Boqvist (slightly different styles with Miro being the more well-rounded imo, but Boqvist shoots a TON so I'd tier their upside similarly)
    3) Dobson (realize no one else is likely as high on him - but I see him as an "almost" Ekblad - who I also think has another gear)
    4) Hughes (going to be a great player for a long time but I see him ceding PP1 to a PP specialist down the road which, for me, limits his upside)

There's actually a few other D who's upside I like more than the Bouchard's/Smith's who have much higher certainty of making it, but I need to see landing place and development in D+1 before it's more than dart-throwing.

Yeah the Ghost/Fox's Fung. Guys whose offensive upside I like more but certainty of making it is much less. That's why situation they're drafted into and D+1 development are key. But they're darts.

I like your Brodie (Smith) analogy and agree with the "tier" you're ranking Bouchard in too. For me he's more Niskanen-upside, but that's because I think Ekblad will still develop his O-game further.

That's an interesting take. Usually I see people bashing Hughes' defensive game, haven't seen many questioning his offensive game. But I think I sort of get it - his main strengths are better suited for even strength play. But then again, wouldn't you have to put Heiskanen in that same exact group as well? And maybe even Dahlin as well?

I personally think they all have enough offensive creativity that they'll be used on PP1, especially when considering all the other qualities they bring to the table - offensive breakouts, zone entries, walking the line, skating that helps their team avoid SH goals against. Hughes definitely doesn't have the kind of shot that Boqvist for example has but then again, it's not like Dahlin and Heiskanen have huge bombs either.

Maybe like 10 years ago, someone like Hughes wouldn't have been a PP1 guy but my personal opinion is that the NHL has changed so much that players like him are exactly what teams want on their PP1 - especially if they're only using one defenseman on that unit which is quite common these days (meaning you need someone who can skate really well in case there's SH odd-man rush).

That is the line of thinking I was operating under JP - that he's an ideal ES guy - but that's a fair point that perhaps Heiskanen is as well.

Would almost always defer to JP's take on prospects, so guys take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but my opinion is just reflective of what I've seen to date and that "feeling" you get with some guys sometimes.
