Default Alex Ovechkin 600 goal watch thread

He's only 2 goals away at the moment and bound to get it sooner or later. 32 years old and still scoring with the best of them. In my opinion he is the greatest goal scorer of all time. Doing what he is doing during an era with the best goaltenders and great defense systems, all while continuing to put up goals at an age where most goal scorers go by the way side is simply incredible. Love Ovie man.

Still at a higher goals per game than the Great One....which is insane to think about. What's even crazier is if he doesn't bail to the KHL in his later years....he could actually catch Gretzky. Can....you....imagine. That would be so cool to watch.

Ovechkin truly is one of the best goal scorers ever!! But for him to catch Gretzky right now, he would need to score 49 goals in a season for 6 more years.. I'm not sure that is actually possible, not as his age.. Ofcourse that number is based on if he stayed at 598 until the end of this season, which won't happen..

7 more years at 42 goals per season
8 more years at 37 goals per season

If he was able to score 10 more goals this season then he would need:
47 per season in 6 years
42 per season in 7 years
36 per season in 8 years

Just the fact that people are even talking about the possibility of catching Gretzky is an amazing thing. Ovechkin's problem is he never hit any 80-90 goal seasons. Shit... even 70 goals is crazy.

Oh ya I doubt he does it. I just think it's crazy that he's close....or even in conversation as Atomic says.

My favorite Alex Ovechkin moment was when I was watching this game with my brother and dad. We were talking about the greatest scorers ever. I kept saying Ovechkin was better than Lafluer. My dad kept disagreeing and I kept talking up Ovie the whole game. Then Ovie ended up scoring this goal. Afterwards I said "You ever see Lafluer score a goal like that?". I didn't mean to make Lafluer sound like a plugger but I just wanted to needle him a bit since I know he doesn't like Ovie because he's a russian lol. Man that was funny.

I want to start another thread My best friend and I were in a heated argument over who's better overall throughout there career Malkin or Ovi. I took Ovi because his goal scoring and individual awards put him in the all time great category. Either way there both 2/3 of there generation.

Love Ovi. He's been held off the score sheet my two games in a row and Laine is really heating up, I hope he can break out and get back on track for 50.

The top-10 for those of you who are about to google it:
    1. Wayne Gretzky, 894
    2. Gordie Howe, 801
    3. Jaromir Jagr, 765
    4. Brett Hull, 741
    5. Marcel Dionne, 731
    6. Phil Esposito, 717
    7. Mike Gartner, 708
    8. Mark Messier, 694
    9. Steve Yzerman, 692
    10. Mario Lemieux, 690

Would be cool to see someone compare the goals scored per game for Ovy/Gretzky vs. total goals scored per game to show which is the most dominant scorer when eras are compared.

There is usually a few threads talking about era adjusted goals and what not. I remember when Stammer scored 60 goals that it was a better season according to the era adjustment and whatever calculations they made.

I think you just look at the names on that list and see that they all played in relatively the same era vs Ovi being in a class of his own in regards to era.

It would be fitting if he scored his 600th goal against his likely Rocket Richard successor....
