Interesting to see him get an extension right away as well. Wonder how this affects Antti Raanta going forward as he's a free agent at seasons end as well.

Darcy Kuemper is getting a two-year extension from ARI as part of this trade from LAK. AAV on Kuemper extension is $1.85M. Tobias Rieder and Scott Wedgewood going to LA, as @FriedgeHNIC and @craigsmorgan reported.

The $1.85mm/year suggests that Kuemper is a backup only, doesn't it? Going into next year with Kuemper and either Adin Hill or a even lower-paid goalie to act as Kuemper's backup seems like malpractice.

Maybe, or could end up being a bargain starter too. Hard to say.

Arizona isn't a big spender so I wouldn't put much stock into Kuemper's salary. He might end up being their #1 goalie moving forward.

Nice job by the Kings to sell high. Quick is their guy and they gained a depth scorer out of this. Meanwhile Arizona might do the same with Raanta in the coming days.

I'd love to see Raanta/OEL end up on the Islanders for the playoff push. Solves two problems for the Islanders in one fell swoop.

Perfect time for fantasy GMs to sell high on Kuemper. He, like so many, played well in LA. Will be interesting to see what his numbers look like in Arizona. I expect a drastic turn for the worse.

I think so too. Kings sold high on him and in return get a 25 year old winger who fits in with their top 9. And they give Wedgewood a[nother] shot as a backup.

I don't see this making much sense for Arz. Feel like they could have just gotten a pick/prospect for Reider, not had to eat cap, and still had Wedgewood who has been decent this season.

Unless they feel they can’t sign Raanta and move him at the deadline...oh, say with OEL to the Islanders...

Raanta as a UFA maybe wants to test the waters? And I read some rumor that ARZ and Rieders agent don't play well together...

Eklund is spouting off that NYI are kicking tires hard on Raanta which is what precipitated this move. I see it as more of a move to solidify their goaltending. Raanta's been really decent this year all things considered with that team. I think they resign him Chayka hasn't been looking for just kids to fill his line up. still not sure he's got a full plan for this team

Scenario 1: Raanta is dealt or leaves as a UFA - at least they have someone to play goal along with whoever else they pick up.

Scenario 2: If Raanta re-signs then they have a decent backup and/or cannon fodder for the rough nights. They don't have any NHL-ready prospects in goal.

I get it from their perspective.

Both of your scenarios make sense, but my qualm with it is, why couldn't Wedgewood have filled that same role, costing them less in salary, and leaving Reider open as a trade chip for something else, or as an RFA to be brought back next year?

Backup goalie wasn't a hole for them. There are so many other holes to fill on this team. They took what wasn't a weakness, and beefed it up, while just creating another hole at F.

I agree with you about Rieder but I'd say Kuemper is better than Wedgewood and has some upside. Unlikely, but it's there.
