Ill expand a little on my take....

Carlson - looks like the Caps are going all in to sign him long term. If so, he will be the man for years on that lethal PP and should put up similar numbers going forward. If he hits UFA, his value may change, but I think he will stay with WAS.

Barrie - pure offensive D and will either continue to rack up offensive zone starts in COL or if he is dealt, he will be the PPQB wherever he goes

Rielly - close to Barrie but I think Gardiner blocks him from truly being the #1 offensive go to guy in Toronto.

In the end, Carlson and Barrie are the unquestioned top offensive D, whereas Reilly shares that role with Gardiner

I don't see any flaws in this logic. Bang on IMO.

    1. Carlson

    2. Barrie/Reilly - I felt that I had to make this decision (there was another defender also involved, but he was the easy cut) earlier this year to thin out my defense for some more prospect forwards, and I was torn. I think they are very similar, and I couldn't fault you for preferring either. I almost kept both, but my defense was so loaded, that these guys are depth guys. In hindsight, I probably should've cut OEL.

Disclaimer: I decided on Reilly due to him being on the Leafs, which matters in my league due to my having Andersen, which is completely outside the purview of this analysis.

Thanks for the responses! My thoughts on the 3 are as follows:

-Carlson is the oldest of the three at 28 yrs old. Obviously he's having a great season which is occurring in his contract year. He's obviously the main offensive dman on a that's always a threat to put the puck in the net. Washington has basically zero other dmen who can over take his position as the key offensive option. That being said, he's been they're "guy" for a while now yet he's only broken the 40point barrier twice (including this year) in his now 8th year in the league (2015-16 he was injured and would've passed that total easily) so I guess it's basically 3 out of 8 seasons that he would've surpassed 40 points. With Washington's core (ovie, backstrom, oshie) aging how much longer does Carlson have to become that CONSISTENT elite dman for fantasy purposes before the inevitable rebuild starts?

-Barrie is 26 yrs old and became an nhl regular in 2013-14 where he potted 38 points in 64 games (49pt pace). Since then he's posted 53,49 and 38 (in 74 games) point seasons. This year he has 30pts in 40gp (61.5pt pace if he didn't miss time). So it would seem that his floor is 40 with a strong chance at 50-60 every year. I know with Colorado now having makar and girard they could ship Barrie out but I'd have to think wherever he would go he'd still be that teams main offensive dman.

-Reilly is the youngest at 23 yrs old. As stated above by Loco Man Gardiner seems like he'll always block Reilly from taking that step to elite level producer. Also doesn't help that the leafs have Liligren in the system and yet are always rumoured to be looking for that elite level puck moving dman from outside the organization.

Carlson is the easy answer here for me. It's nice to finally see Rielly showing that he can be a force but he's still a hair behind Barrie for me.
