    Default Garoppolo

Oh, to be a starting-caliber NFL QB.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Jimmy Garoppolo was set to reach free agency this offseason but has instead agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million deal to stay with the 49ers. Garafolo noted it's the "biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis."

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported the deal includes a total of $74 million in guaranteed money.

Adam Schefter of ESPN later reported that while the deal isn't officially done, it "seems like only a matter of time."

He needs to put up Peyton Manning level numbers and win multiple Super Bowls to make this contract make any sense at all.

As a Niners fan, I hate the contract. I don't want to compare this to Kaepernicks deal because I dont think they are even close in regards to skill level. I think Garopplo is a much better QB, even in the small amount of time we've seen him, but signing him to this much money this early is just crazy.

An interesting (alternative) take below. I only snipped out a portion of the article.

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/02/...-largest-ever/

Before the deal was announced, I broke down the quarterback market and projected that Garoppolo would sign a five-year deal worth $130 million with $80 million in guarantees.

That was calculated after factoring in what Brees, Cousins, Ryan, and Rodgers would sign for this offseason, what Derek Carr and Matthew Stafford signed for last offseason, and the cost of buying Garoppolo out of his franchise tag years ? as to avoid a situation like the one that happened in Washington with Cousins. If Garoppolo would have been tagged for two years, he would have been guaranteed at least $50 million in salary. Three years of the tag ? roughly $90 million, all guaranteed.

And then he would be 29 years old and be looking for a five-year contract (like the one he just signed) with big guaranteed money on top of that.

    Not a great situation.

If the 49ers had to overpay to avoid going into franchise tag limbo, it was money well spent, but there?s no indication that they did that.

Garoppolo received $7.5 million more than my overall contract projection, but $6 million less in guaranteed money. If the 49ers overpaid Garoppolo, it was by $1.5 million ? one percent of the available money they have this offseason.

Osweiler got paid before he played a game for the Texans. At least we've seen Garopplo play for the Niners and how he fits into the system, or how the system fits him. I wouldn't compare these two players simply based on getting a big contract.

Interesting thoughts and ideas here. Certainly helps evaluate the contract better than expected. I still dont like it, but I do agree I'd rather gamble this way and hope he works out then watch him work out and it cost them even more down the road when he's declining instead of projecting up.

Insane amount of money for such an unproven player. Cousins is giddy with anticipation (should net around 150 mil), and Foles is like

Perfect storm happened for him. Went to a team with the most cap space, won every game, looked good, meshes with the HC, team badly needs a QB.

It's actually a surprisingly fair deal. It's a lot, but fair if he performs well.
