Poor and/or inconsistent play coupled with stellar back up performances.
These two young guys were supposed to be the go-tos for their respective teams. Both are on decent teams. What's the reason for the regression?

Havana, nails it. But I disagree with Belexus, I think Allen has a better chance to turn it around this year.

Interesting, from what I have read it is Jones that is really not that good and that Allen will be fine... am concerned as a Allen owner with his lack of playing time. Looked it up and he has had as many bad games as Holtby this year (gave up 4 or more goals in a game) - Allen has done this 8 times in 37 games while Holtby has done this 8 times in 38 games. St Louis is riding the hot hand and thinking a 32 years old career back-up who has played amazing in a really small sample size (23 games - 19 starts) will continue at this level is very questionable approach.

Not questionable at all at this point. People have been waiting for 2 months for Hutton to come back down to earth and he just keeps playing better. Is it sustainable? No. Is it likely that he just goes back to league-average back-up the rest of the year? Also no. Hutton is just outplaying Allen right now. Allen has trouble holding his post, and has always had consistency issues. Last playoffs he was one of our best players period. He's also been one of the worst at different times the last year and a half. Hutton always plays square, doesn't overcommit, controls rebounds better. Doesn't really matter that he's 32, he's been pretty consistently the better goalie most of the year. He also has a 2.05 GAA, .929 sv%, and 7 shutouts over 40 starts with St. Louis. Very good numbers over a good sample size for a back-up goalie. Blues have a good system, which is why Ells looked so much better here than in OTT/PHI. The .947 sv% this year will come down to earth, but who knows if Allen takes the job back completely this year.
This is why proven workhorses like Price, Holtby, Crawford, Rask, Bobrovsky etc. are so valuable in fantasy hockey - this kind of stuff rarely happens to them. They have the track record and they have the big contracts, so teams usually put them back in even when they struggle.
If you go with a rather unproven goalie in fantasy hockey, you should always try to acquire his backup as well just in case something like this happens.
