Report: NHL could place time limit on official video reviews

If the NHL is going to continue to rely on video replay I pray they institute a time limit. Things have gotten out of hand and need to be nipped in the bud.

The NHL could soon be placing time limitations on referees when reviewing plays.During the all-star weekend, NHL Hockey Operations director Colin Campbell hosted a meeting with the four coaches, the on-ice officials, some general managers in town and a few others in the hockey operations department regarding certain aspects of the review process.

"During that meeting on Saturday... It was discussed the possibility of one way of executing [reviews] in the future is limiting the amount of time referees could look at the [tablet] and review these things," said Sportsnet's Chris Johnston on Hockey Central.

While it remains to be seen whether or not a time limit on the review process will come to fruition, recent negative reactions to goaltender interference reviews have resulted in the NHL sending out a memo instructing officials to "not look at this so finely when they're looking at the video," said Johnston.

This is something fans have been saying pretty much since video reviews became a big thing. If you can't see within 30 seconds that you made a mistake, then call on the ice stands and move on. Let's get rid of clear mistakes but that's it. I think the NFL is moving towards this direction as well.

The way I see it is that the video should provide evidence that is 100% obvious... Like Duchene's offside

that's a fine line. one minute and a wrong call then 30 seconds later on tv we all see it. why not a minute and a half. I agree with guru here, let's get the call right if were going to delay it at all.

The issue is when they spend 45 minutes reviewing a play and still get it wrong

Exactly. It can't be somewhere in between. If they put a time limit on and get it wrong, then that is a waste of time.
