Default 2018 IIFH World Junior Hockey Championship Discussion Thread

I thought a thread to discuss the tourney was needed. Post here to discuss any current game or thoughts on the tournament in general. I didn't want to keep flooding the Pool thread with posts about the games.

Finland on the PP down 4-2. Be nice if they made a game of it here.

Did you check on reddit? You can usually find links to games there.

I still can't get over the first goal Canada scored. Everyone in the hockey world seems to agree it wasn't a goal but for some reason those refs thought it was a good goal. That "goal" lead to Finnish captain Valimaki being frustrated and taking a stupid penalty which in turn lead to the second goal by Canada. I don't blame Luukkonen for either of those two but the Raddysh goal he definitely should have stopped. It was a bad game from Finland but those situations really made it impossible for them to get their game going.

Finland also needs to make some changes to their PP. Their plan can't be "throw it to Tolvanen, he'll do the rest". It's too easy to take that Tolvanen shot away when they have no other options. And Tolvanen can't be both the playmaker and the shooter.

I also don't understand the schedule. All the good teams were playing yesterday, and today we have nothing interesting going on in the tournament.

Did Max Jones really play with number 49?

I thought IIHF had some rule about players not allowed to wear numbers that high. I went through all the top teams, and the second highest number I could find was 36. I thought the upper limit was 35 but Kotkansalo from Finland and Jones from USA have higher than that numbers. Does anyone remember what the exact rule is?

Ya, I am not sure how the refs managed to call that first goal a good goal but that penalty on Valimaki is all on him. Stupid penalties aren't caused by the refs, it's a choice players make. If you are frustrated, you dont take a dumb penalty. That in itself is just dumb.

I do agree with you about that first one though.

Yeah, not trying to make excuses for the stupid penalty but it was caused by the goal which never should have counted. It all started rolling downhill from that huge mistake by the refs. Those refs should be removed from the tournament immediately.

At least they got the amazing play from Cal Foote knocking the puck off the line right.

Oh wait, you weren't cheering for Canada.
