They knew he had one before, and if they thought it was serious they would have put him on the IR and not Price per the thinking in the other thread about Price hitting IR. My guess is Montoya woke up not feeling 100% and they had the opportunity with Niemi.

Players don't always go on IR when they're hurt for a while (people complain about this almost weekly in Yahoo leagues). Montoya's replacement was already brought up hence no need to put him on IR immediately.

Price/Montoya, one had to go on to make space for the replacement, or do I have the timing of Montoya's DTD and Price's IR wrong? If they needed to make space, why wouldn't they put Montoya on and not cause a panic when Price hit the IR?

Your mind is all over the place. Quick summary as I see it:

1) Price was retroactively put on IR. He's eligible to return anytime.
2) Montoya might be out for a while or it could be a quick return. Niemi is a bench warmer and has no impact on him. He just occupies one of the team's 50 contracts (they're at 46 now).
3) There's no timing implications here. Niemi happened to be on waivers and this was the time to make a claim or else he would clear.
4) What panic? That's for the media and for gullible fans. The team doesn't care.

I wonder if Price is ready to come back and Montoya is expected to miss more time. This way, instead of having Lindgren ride the pine behind Price, he can go to the AHL again and continue to get his starts while Niemi rides the pine behind Price until Montoya is ready to return.

they couldn't have looked very hard for another G.. there must have been an option somewhere in the NHL that isn't named Niemi. Great news for Division rivals!

So I figured Niemi was on their NHL roster and a spot had to be made and assumed Montoya got put on IR to make that NHL roster room. Right now Niemi is on "Waivers Non-Roster" (can't really figure what that is, i'm guessing it's purgatory until an NHL roster spot is opened up for him to get onto the Canadiens so to speak). Because with Fucale they were at 23 NHL rostered players.

Fucale is on "Emergency Loan" right now (didn't know that either), and now that the "emergency" (less than 2 active goalies) is over (Niemi + Lindgren) Fucale must go down.

I was just assuming a bunch of stuff, sorry.
