Default Fastest skater in NHL history?

I see many people on other message boards claim Mcdavid was, i thought bure was faster than mcdavid but maybe im wrong.

    McDavid
    Bure
    Gartner
    Lafluer
    Cournoyer
    Perreault
    Beliveau
    Bobby Hull
    Paul Coffey
    Fedorov
    Orr

it was amazing how fast cournoyer and lafluer were, could just imagine if they or any of the older speedsters had the new lighter skates of today

It's all a matter of perspective.

It's amazing how quick McDavid is considering how incredibly fast the game is today.

Most of the players today are faster than the fastest players from the 70s, 80s and 90s...

Bure and co were all incredibly fast for their eras but who knows where he would line-up today...

I am not sure if McDavid has a higher top speed than the other "fastest" guys in history, but one of the things that sets him apart for me, is how effective he is handling the puck at top speed. Most really fast guys lose something when it comes to puck handling at top speed. I think this makes McDavid deceptively faster than other really fast guys.

I have some serious doubts that McDavid is the fastest the NHL has ever seen. Pavel Bure was insanely fast and Paul Coffey skating style made it look like he wasn't going 100 mph (wicked stride, no wasted effort). There were likely fringe guys who had wheels, but not the hands or head to play much.

In hockey, quickness is better than being fast, which is why I don't think the one lap of America tells us anything. I want to see how quick a player is from blue line to blue line (acceleration). I would also have them start skating parallel to but behind (within 5 feet) one blue line, then the whistle blows and they take off for the other blue line with the clock starting when they cross the first blue line. I'm sure they could give us how quickly they crossed the center red line and then the opposite blue line. That would be a more usable indication of a player's speed. How often do players get a chance to wind up and skate one lap around the ice during a game...I mean outside of the very frustrating Paul Coffey. He would start behind his net and skate through the entire team, realize he didn't have a good angle to shoot the puck and then he would skate back outside the offensive zone. Seriously frustrating for Oiler fans. He did put up some points though...

Watching that in a skills comp would be almost as boring and painful as that silly event this year where the players shot from all four lines...

The skills comp should be about fun and excitement (ie: dunk competition, home run derby).

I think it would be the NHL's equivalent of the 100 metre dash! Super exciting, filled with bursts of speed! These "skills" should be part of the game, shooting from all four lines is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Bure WAS insanely fast - relative to the plugs he played against. Times change, and the players of today are far and away better than previous generations. Mario is maybe my favorite player ever, but he has hands of stone compared to someone like Patrick Kane. Equipment evolves, training regimes evolve, it's just not the same. There isn't a doubt in my mind that McDavid today would beat Bure in his prime.

That said, I do like your blue-line to blue-line race much better than what they currently do. Those big sweeping rink-wide turns just aren't a real part of the game, so they aren't an accurate measure of speed.

I think players today are better conditioned and are way better at nutrition. Add to this that the skating skill is understood a lot better now and we have better skating coaches and better skates. I would be very surprised if the faster skater of today isn't the faster than skaters from 20 years ago.

Hard to argue what you're saying, well except for Mario having hands of stone compared to any era! I would still take Super Mario over Patrick Kane...and I'm an Oiler fan.

Go back and watch the footage. He had a sack full of dangles and he made a lot of defenders look foolish, but it was all in slow-motion compared to the moves that get put on display today. He was more dominant relative to the competition, but not more skilled (training/equipment/nutrition/technology/etc all big factors of course, so it's not really fair).

Dylan Larkin broke Mike Gartner's 20 year old record in the speed skate at the 2015 All-Star Skills competition. Guessing he must be pretty fast, like historically fast.

I'd like to see Dylan Larkin break Gartner's record using the same skates Gartner wore. And getting clocked with the same radar gun. To me giving Larkin that record was akin to giving John Scott MVP. It was basically orchestrated to be so.
