    Default [Strategy] Streaming goalies

I'm currently in a dog fight for 1st place in my league and Jake Allen is killing me right now. I'm thinking about dropping him and to start streaming goalies for the rest of the season. Anyone has experience doing this? Should I actually do it? Any tips or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Do you have transaction limits? Daily adds? What are the waiver rules?

Basically, in my setup, which looks very similar to yours, we had to change our rules to add in goalie scoring and transaction rules because this strategy was so successful that a marginal team won the league the first year using this strategy. So yea, it's definitely viable as long as you can carry it out. Stick to goalie post or dailfaceoff and you can usually find a starting goalie for 4 days of a 7 day week at least.

If you have unlimited moves, this can be a very effective strategy. Just depends on what kind of guys are available on the waiver wire. It can also be quite frustrating if your free agent claims take effect the following day as even goaliepost and LWL have a hard time getting those predictions right more than 60 or 70% of the time.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

As the others have said, it can be done to great effect, or not.
It really depends on how much quantity is available in your FA pile. Are lower tier starters like M. Smith available, or is it just backups that you would be streaming? I wouldn't go for it unless there are a couple starter type guys to guarantee that you actually can get starts.

Streaming goalies can be like getting carried away at a casino... it goes great until it doesn't.

In a 10man league with unlimited moves and instant pickups, I think you could do a decent job of it. It is risque though if you aren't on top of things.

I streamed with pitchers in my baseball league (same thing, chasing matchups and stuff). It works if your leaguemates don’t notice really. My other league members saw me streaming and would also stream, but do it the day before. And they stopped dropping pitchers. Then injuries caught up. And there were no longer any diamonds in the rough come playoff time.

It works great until the options on FA dry up.

    +1 to these points:

Works great if your adds take effect same day. If they are only next day, don't even bother.
Works great if there are at least a couple starters available. Having access to busy backups or 1B guys can also work out for you.
Works best if you're the only one doing this. If there's a few guys doing this, you risk being left out in the cold if they get to it before you.

Thanks for the feedback guys, should've mentioned that I have limited moves, but I have about 30 moves left for the rest of the season. And also it's a daily add league which makes streaming a lot easier. There are #1 goalies available in the free agent pool like Mason, Ward, Smith, Elliott, Mrazek, which makes it tempting to try to stream them the rest of the season.

In a one year league I would take Mason or Ward over Allen for the rest of the season.

    Great thread!

I am in first by a large margin and barring a collapse am poised to win back to back championships (over three G's!!)

The streaming tender approach has absolutely been a key factor not only in racking up points but also in selling high on name value tenders. My league is unlimited add/drops ($10 per transaction generates out pot - something I highly recommend btw).

Since our league only counts wins and losses it really is a team stat. Tending is such a volatile position with so much flux that waiver tenders can be gold. It is literally the only position who's value off the wire can be exactly replaced. Crawford goes down? Darling just as valuable. Lose a stud fwd or D and good luck with Parenteau off the wire. However name guys like Price and Rask still command a large return in deals.

I was able to ship Rask for Neal and Anisimov and grab Budaj off the wire. Budaj has the exact same points but in a million years could not be traded for what I got for Rask. It was like the clouds parted and I kept riding the wire grabbing Howard, Johnson, Darling to compliment Budaj. I recently dropped Johnson for Greiss and now am laughing now and the future.

I will never trade for a tender again and if you can ride the wire you can really make enough moves to win your league. Definitely the way to go

    Good luck down the stretch!

It's always better two have two solid #1 goalies, but if you don't have that luxury then streaming works very well.

I'm currently in 1st in my league and I've been streaming my 2nd goalie all year: Anderson, Condon, Budaj (who I regrettably dropped), Vaseline and now Andersen.

I'll probably ride Andersen until Quick is close to coming back since Anderson (who I was eyeing) just got scooped earlier than I anticipated.

But yes - the strategy works very well in smaller leagues with unlimited moves.
